7 Best Glass Pipe Cleaners – Tobacco and Weed in 2020

I think we’ve all learned the hard way that the longer you put off cleaning your tub, the more difficult and gross it will be. The same thing goes for your glass pipes.

You can think of cleaning your pipes the same way you would anything else.

You technically won’t die if you neglect to do laundry or clean your stove for months on end, but it’s unsightly and unhygienic.

Not only can a pipe caked in ash and resin result in dirtier (and potentially carcinogenic) smoke, it can actually degrade and ruin a glass pipe. The resin and ash can even catch fire if you let it get bad enough!

From a user experience perspective, smoking out of a squeaky clean pipe will allow you to taste the strain much better.

Plus, dirty pipes are stinky. You don’t want it smelling up that awesome stash bag you got.

Here, we’ll learn how to clean a glass pipe like a pro so you can spend less time cleaning and more time smoking.

How To Clean A Glass Pipe With Boiling Water

Some argue that boiling water can weaken the integrity of your glass pipe. If you have a super expensive pipe you hold near and dear to your heart, maybe avoid this method just to be safe.

If you’re the economical type and go for those nice cheap glass pipes, this method might be the fastest and the easiest for you. Many go about this cleaning method without incident, so give it a try.

Step 1: Empty every piece of debris you can from the pipe bowl. Turn it upside down and shake it, tap it, and scoop it out with a paper towel. Also, remember to remove and discard the screen if you use one.

Step 2: Boil water. You can choose to either place your pipe in a glass or metal dish and pour the boiling water over the top of it, or simply dunk the pipe into the pot.

Some like to add dishwashing liquid instead of salt in the boiling water.

Step 3: Let the pipe hang out in the boiling water for 15-30 minutes depending on how dirty it was to begin with. Then, use a paper towel and some q-tips to start scrubbing the softened resin off the surface.

At this point, it’s a good idea to have some clean pipe cleaners on hand to stick in the mouthpiece and wiggle around inside the pipe to clean hard-to-reach resin.

Step 4: Continue to wipe resin off until it’s no longer caking the surface and rinse thoroughly when you’re done. Viola!

How To Clean A Glass Pipe Using Rubbing Alcohol

When boiling water just isn’t getting the job done, or you don’t want to risk cracking it, you can use rubbing alcohol to break down the sticky resin.

You can opt for alcohol alone, or add salt for an abrasion factor. This is especially useful if your buildup is thick.

Step 1: Fill a Ziploc bag full of isopropyl alcohol of at least 90% purity (enough to cover the pipe).

Step 2: Add 1 Tbsp of salt if you’d like.

Step 3: Shake it! Do this for about 2 minutes

Step 4: If you can, maneuver some salt into the interior of the pipe. Close the holes off with your fingers through the bag, and shake the salt around inside the pipe.

The salt here will act as an abrasive sponge on the tar and resin to dissolve it.

Step 5: Let the pipe soak in alcohol and salt for several hours or overnight. Repeat the shake as necessary until it’s shiny clean.

Step 6: Make sure to always thoroughly rinse the pipe with clean water after this method to remove any alcohol before using, similar process to cleaning bongs!

How To Clean A Glass Pipe Using Alternative Cleaners

Sometimes you’ll need to break out the big guns.

If you’d like to use a stronger commercial or household cleaner, we recommend trying denture tablets, vinegar + baking soda, simple green, or another commercial chemical cleaner marketed specifically to smokers.

You can even use vodka if you’re in a pinch!

Denture tablets: Drop 2-3 denture tablets in a vat of hot water and soak your pipe for about a half hour.

Vinegar + Baking Soda: Combine equal parts vinegar and baking soda and watch the magic fizz unfold. Soak your pipe in this solution until clean.

This also doubles as nature’s best deodorizer so no more stinky pipe!

Formula 420 or Simple Green: This one’s pretty straightforward, these chemical cleaners are marketed for smokers. Follow the instructions on the product to clean your pipe.

If unnatural chemicals or cleaner smells are an issue for you, use this method as a last resort.

If All Else Fails, Try Freezing

If all else fails, freezing can help harden the resin to a degree where it can be chipped off manually.

Some stoners don’t like to scrape their bowls for fear of scratching the surface, but if you do opt for this method there are a number of tools specifically designed for cleaning glass pipes.

You can also just use what you have at home: a pencil, a paperclip, basically, anything small that will fit inside.

Freeze the glass pipe for at least 30 minutes (preferably several hours) to allow the resin to completely harden.

You’ll need to work quickly to chip off the resin, as it can gum up again quickly when it warms up.

You’ll likely need to do one of the above methods to clean off the last remaining resin after you’ve chipped most of it off.

Final Thoughts

Prevention is the best medicine for a glass pipe.

Cleaning your pipe frequently allows for much easier cleaning. The more resin buildup, the harder it will be to scrape off.

How often you need to clean is dependant on how much you smoke. Let it’s appearance be your ultimate guide, but aiming for at least every 2 weeks is a good place to start.

Smoking Guides: How to Clean A Glass Pipe or One Hitter

Need to learn how to clean a glass pipe with standard household items? Look no further with this handy guide from Me Time Box Products.

  • Paperclip Poking Method
  • Solvent + Salt Method
  • Boil the Glass Pipe

A glass pipe looks so beautiful and pristine when you first get it. The swirls of color and smooth curves draw your attention like a piece of meticulously and passionately constructed art.

It does not take too long for that same glass smoking pipe to turn black with resin, become a clogged glass pipe and for that resin to start creeping onto your fingers and lips like some symbiote alien from another planet.

For many of us, a resinated bowl is just too much to deal with. The act of cleaning a glass pipe just seems overwhelming and ends up being the reason why we go off and purchase another smoking pipe of some sort.

In all reality, if you want to know how to clean a glass pipe, it isn’t very hard. I don’t know how many pipes I have cleaned, but it’s second nature now. There are three main methods that I have used to clean a one hitter, cleaning my bong, cleaning a bubbler or cleaning a glass pipe.

My strategy for teaching you how to clean a one hitter is slightly different because of the size difference, but these basic methods still apply.

Let’s focus on cleaning a regular glass pipe for now.

The Paper Clip Poking Method

The first method I will review is the paperclip method. For this method you will need the following.

  • A paper clip
  • A paper towel
  • A lighter
  • A dirty glass pipe
  • Your hands
  • Your Fav Netflix show

For me, finding an awesome show or movie on Netflix, Hulu or cable (if you still have cable) is key.

Step 1: To get started, unfold a couple of inches from the paperclip and start with the little hole in the bowl.

Step 2: Turn the bowl upside down and hold the lighter’s flame to it for a while until the resin softens. When you start scraping with the paper clip, be careful, the glass can be a little thinner in this section of the glass pipe you are cleaning and can chip. After you have cleared the hole, scrape the edge of the bowl and you should have a black ball of resin forming that I will let you decide what to do with.

Step 3: The paper towel, or some very disposable cloth, should be used to wipe the paperclip clean.

Step 4: Now move onto the mouthpiece. The glass around the hole of the mouthpiece can also be prone to chipping so be careful with the mighty piece of metal you are using to clean your glass pipe.

[ Pro Tip] It may also be worth it to use a lighter on the outside portions of the bowl you are scraping. The heat will help soften the resin to make the scraping easier. Be careful not to burn yourself.

Step 5: Scrape out the stem of your glass pipe and you will being pulling out large gobs of resin. Again, you can decide what to do with that. You can also consider using the carb hole on the side of the bowl to extract some of the resin. The carb hole gives you access to some of the inside crannies of the bowl that are otherwise tough to reach.

Step 6: You may need to tap the bowl gently against the paper towel to get some of the resin to fall out.

Cleaning a glass pipe with a paperclip is really just a short-term fix your dirty glass pipe.

Using a Solvent + Salt

The next level of cleaning is using solvents such ass rubbing alcohol. I prefer using isopropyl rubbing alcohol to clean a glass pipe, because is the easiest and most thorough.

Isopropyl alcohol is cheap to purchase, but you do have the added cost of buying rubbing alcohol for cleaning your glass pipe.

Step 1: Pour the rubbing alcohol into a clear container of some sort and immerse your bowl in it.

Step 2: Mix in 1/4 cup of salt as well. The alcohol and salt bring will do the rest of the work.

Step 3: Leave and come back in three hours. You may have to rinse the pipe with some clean fresh water after you pull the pipe out of the alcohol, but it should look as good as new afterwards.

Let the pipe dry and take a couple of dry pulls to make sure it doesn’t taste like alcohol. If it does, give it another rinse. Voila! You are done.

Boil the Glass Pipe

You can also boil your bowl if that is better than buying alcohol.

Step 1: Get a pot and fill it with water

Step 2: Add your glass pipe

Step 3: Boil the glass pipe for 20 minutes

Step 4: Let cool and wipe down with a dry cloth

The boiling method is not quite as effective as alcohol and you may still need your trusty paperclip to get the soft boiled resin out of the pipe.

Also, your glass pipe will rattle around in a pot of hard boiling water, which could cause it to break. You do not need a hard boil to get the pipe clean. If the glass pipe cracks a little and you are wondering if you should be smoking out a cracked glass pipe, just toss it and get your free glass smoking pipes on us.

And, remember the laws of thermodynamics. If you run cold water over your glass bowl right after you pulled it off the burner, you are not likely to have a glass pipe anymore, but instead a pile of shattered glass which you cannot smoke out of.

Those are the methods I have used to clean a glass pipe. If you have any better ideas on how to clean a glass pipe, we would love to hear from you.

In the meantime, get some lava soap and scrub your hands well. You may need some fingernail trimmers as well.

That way the next day you won’t be worrying that other people in your office are noticing the resin under your nails and you can continue to enjoy life, every day.
