IDC estimates that by 2020, there will be over 50 billion terminals and devices connected to the network worldwide, of which more than 50% of data needs to be stored, processed and analyzed at the edge of the network. Gartner predicts that by 2022, edge computing will be essential for all digital services. Since the beginning of 2018, the three major Chinese carriers, and Huawei have been all actively pushing forward the research on mobile edge computing (MEC) based on 5G. At MWC 2019 this year, China Mobile and China Unicom had respectively released the white paper on MEC.

What is edge computing

Edge computing is not a new concept. As a content delivery network (CDN) and cloud service provider, Akamai had cooperated with IBM to try “edge computing” as early as 2003.

The so-called edge computing means using an open platform that integrates core capabilities of network, computing, storage, and application to provide services at the edge of the network, near the source of data or object. The difference between edge computing and cloud computing is, one decentralizes the computing capacity downward, and the other centralizes computing on cloud.

MEC is one of the key technologies in 5G evolution. It is to effectively integrate both wireless network and Internet technologies to deploy computing, storage, distribution, big data analysis and other features at the edge of the wireless network; to achieve local and distributed processing of the carrier’s business, improve the processing efficiency of network data, speed up the fast download of content, services and applications from the network; and to satisfy end users’ ultimate experience, meet the low latency, large traffic and security demands of networks of vertical industries.

To realize edge computing or mobile edge computing, a “network + hardware + software” collaborative ecosystem is required. In the software level, it is an open platform with edge computing capacity, on the basis of hardware and network facilities, introducing the concept of “edge nodes” and evolving to “cloud – pipe – edge – device.” The realization forms of edge nodes mainly include 4 parts: first, edge room (outer center, OC), CDN edge node and edge server storage; second, intelligent gateway device; third, MEC small base station; and fourth, edge network transmission.

The 5G era refers to a “thin client, fat pipeline, and rendering cloud” infrastructure. The intelligence of terminals will rely more and more on the capacity of edge computing. The main function itself is to display and interact, and more about sending the algorithm to the edge near the terminal for processing and analysis. It focuses on computing, and data needing long-term storage shall be returned to the data center via network. Edge-cloud collaboration must rely on the cloud-based network architecture.

In the 4G era, we’d consider the intelligent terminal technology has fully advanced the profound integration of traditional PC Internet and mobile network; then in the 5G era, MEC will promote the integration of cloud computing platform and mobile network, and is likely to bring a new round of changes to technology and commercial ecology.

Dr. Peng’s “cloud – pipe – device” integration strategy

Dr. Peng’s promotion of the “cloud – pipe – device” integration strategy could date back to as early as 2013. By cloud layout (data center cluster and cloud service products), pipeline (UWB network), intelligent terminal and platform (Domy box, Domy router and Domy 4K fusion platform), it integrates content, pipelines and terminals to form a complete closed-loop ecosystem.

Cloud

Dr. Peng’s self-built data center cluster is distributed across Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Chengdu and other major cities. It refers to neutral data centers of leading size and quality in China, boasting high-standard T3 and T4 DC rooms, covering a total area of over 200,000 sqm, total number of cabinets reaching about 30,000.

Dr. Peng has been vigorously introducing content providers as it launched the Top 1000 campaign in 2013 and TOP 20000 campaign in 2017. By opening its data center resource and CDN capacity to the well-known content providers of the Internet, such as iQIYI and Tencent Video, Dr. Peng strives to form a symbiotic ecosystem.

Pipeline

Dr. Peng’s fiber-optic IP networks have covered more than 210 cities across China, featuring rich bandwidth, centralized scheduling, flexible configuration, and fast data transmission.

Terminal device

Dr. Peng has independently developed its own intelligent terminals like Domy Box and Domy Router, and the SaaS-based Domy media fusion platform, as well as its innovative platform that can support content distribution, infrastructure operation, system platforms, and industrial applications, thereby getting through between the mobile end and the TV end, and delivering comprehensive home life and entertainment services.

Strategic layout of “cloud – edge – device” collaboration

By years of accumulation, and with the “cloud – pipe – device” infrastructure and service capacity advantage, Dr. Peng reaped explosive growth in the broadband industry, and to some extent helped accelerate the development of Broadband China.

Today, Dr. Peng will rise to the challenge and, guided by its new strategic objective to become “a business and home ISP,” carry out its future layout in 5G and IoT, to transit from the integrated “cloud – pipe – device” closed loop to the open collaborative “cloud – edge – device” strategic architecture.

Cloud

Dr. Peng will accelerate the construction of large-scale data centers, and plans to double the number of data center cabinets to 60 thousand, maintaining its industry-leading scale advantage. It will keep to the geographical advantage and opt to build the new data centers in first-tier cities and their surrounding urban clusters, and meanwhile continue to improve the energy efficiency and adopt comprehensive green and energy-saving construction programs. The continually constructed and opened “big data cloud network ecosystem,” as is required by the industry and customers, integrates public cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud, multi-cloud management, cloud dedicated access, DCI, SD-WAN, CDN and other products, as well as custom solutions, and provides the cloud MSP program.

Terminal device

Dr. Peng will carry on the content aggregation capability of Domy 4K fusion platform, expand technology export and commercial marketing, and will also follow up with the video technology evolution from 4K to 8K definition. It will run the “Xiaopeng Manager” app in the community end, exert the advantage of “door-to-door economy,” work with intelligent home terminal manufacturers to extend traditional broadband installation & maintenance services to installation, configuration, maintenance of all intelligent devices related to Internet and IoT in life.

Edge

Dr. Peng, as a member unit of Edge Computing Consortium, will exert its own advantages and forces for layout in edge computing at three levels.

At the edge node infrastructure level

Dr. Peng boasts nearly 10,000 communities and convergence rooms across 200 cities in China, which can be quickly upgraded to outer centers. Therefore, Dr. Peng will use its resource advantage to build the infrastructure architecture of edge-cloud collaboration, accumulate outer center construction, operation, maintenance and management experiences to prepare for large-scale deployment, and actively serve the carriers and service providers well.

At the CDN edge node level

As for CDN, the fusion partners’ and its own CDN, CDN edge node and link resources will be opened. It will provide unified management services, supply computing power for rental and sales, conduct acceleration and optimization on data network, directly to business and consumer users.

At the edge application level

Dr. Peng’s edge computing development is based on extension from big data and cloud computing solutions. For park cloud, community cloud and other scenarios, it shall start from the industry to explore the use of edge data center and edge network to provide the one-stop solution based upon hybrid IT infrastructure. It will work with public cloud partners to completely support the complex “center + edge” business architecture, dragging the cloud infrastructure capacity right beside the user.

Dr. Peng will also perform the overall resource layout of “cloud – edge – device,” use original access network resources all over the country to build the high-speed channels from outer center to data center, and from data center to public cloud, thus setting up a global unified, cloud-edge integrated scheduling management system, to achieve the edge-cloud collaborative architecture featuring edge computing and center storage.

Edge computing is promising and is now just getting started. It will be a gradual evolution process of technologies and applications. For customers, what matters is not technology, but whether the fast, stable, convenient, safe, and economic needs are met.

Dr. Peng will actively build the “cloud – edge – device” strategic architecture that links vertically to public cloud upward and to terminal devices downward, and horizontally, cooperates with carriers and service providers to, with an open attitude, get better involved into the next generation of Internet ecosystem. It shall seize the historic opportunities of 5G, cloud computing and IoT development, to greet the arrival of IoE and intelligent society.
