The Top 5 Rolling Papers of 2020

The process of rolling up a joint, spliff or blunt is one of the most universally recognized acts across the world of cannabis. Short of the ubiquitous pipe, rolling papers are the most utilized smoking method when it comes to enjoying cannabis, and the quality of the rolling paper is critical to the enjoyment of the joint. Traditionally, papers have been made from wood pulp, but recently natural rolling papers made from healthier and more sustainable products such as hemp, rice and flax have entered the marketplace. Wood paper tends to burn the quickest, rice paper the slowest and hemp burns at a fairly moderate rate. The novelty market has also taken off, with luxury rolling papers made of gold catching the eye of those who want to roll a spliff that sparkles. What are the best papers to roll with at the moment? Check out the list below for Where’s Weed’s Best Rolling Papers for 2020.

5. Zig-Zag Unbleached King Slim

The iconic Zig-Zag label kicks off our list with its classic Unbleached King Slim. Legend has it that back in 1879 a bullet broke the pipe of a French soldier and he improvised by tearing a piece of paper from his sack of gunpowder to use to roll his tobacco. A few years later Maurice and Jacques Braunstein took the rolling paper idea to the next level in their Paris shop by inventing a package that allowed single sheets to be dispensed one at a time. The “Z” shape that the papers make when pulled from the package prompted them to call their new product “Zig-Zag” and the rest is history. Natural flax fibers and the absence of any bleach or chemicals mean nothing gets between you and your favorite strain.

4. Smoking Master 1 1/4

The Miquel Family has been making paper in Spain since the 18 th Century, producing rolling papers since the late 1800s and offering its elite Smoking Brand rolling papers to happy customers since 1924. Smoking Masters are now produced in Catalonia and are FSC certified which means that your joint will burn with pulp from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits. Sealed with 100% natural vegetable gum, these papers provide a surprisingly slow and smooth burn.

3. Natural Mystic Organic Hemp King-Sized Pre-Rolled Cones

Natural Mystic might not be the most well-known brand out there, but this tiny company based in Texas makes some of the best papers for joints and some of the best hemp rolling papers available. The pre-rolled cones are all rolled by hand and feature 100% unbleached fibers to create a brown organic hemp paper that provides an impressively controlled burn rate and a pure taste. The single gumline keeps the cones from unravelling when they are being filled and makes it simple to get your spliff ready if you’re not a skilled roller. All of Natural Mystic’s products are GMO free and Vegan friendly so you know you’ll be smoking some of the healthiest rolling papers on the planet.

2. RAW Classic 1 1/4

RAW papers have set the standard of quality for well over a century and are quite simply some of the best rolling papers for weed that you can find. Founded in the Alcoy region of Spain where the rolling paper booklet was first invented, RAW has since expanded its empire across the globe but continues to produce top-quality and earth-friendly merchandise. And while all of their products deserve recognition, we’re going to choose the Classic 1.25″ version to spotlight here. The natural sheets that create these stalwarts are made from unrefined plants and use organic tree sap to seal joints securely with ease. RAW Classics can be found in all sorts of shops across the country and are an excellent paper to have on hand when the need to roll one up arises.

1. Elements 1 1/4 Ultra-Thin Rice Rolling Papers

Some of the slowest burning rolling papers on the market, these fine rice papers utilize a sugar gum that yields an attractive and slightly sweet burn that won’t interfere with the tastiness of the terpenes in your weed. The pure rice used in the papers results in a smooth burn with little to no ash and the crisscross watermark prevents runs and irregularities. The tiny magnetic closure device in the packaging is genius; it keeps the papers from getting torn, wrinkled or smashed. Made utilizing wind power in Northern Spain, Elements produces some of the best weed rolling paper in the world.

The Best Rolling Papers for Joints

Joint rollers, this list will come in handy.

Prerolls are great and all , but I love rolling joints. There is a great joy in rolling a good joint for the sesh. And papers are the mechanism that delivers your weed, which makes them important. This list is an ode to the joint papers that make our smoking sessions great.

I have personally tried every single one of these brands listed below. Some, I have known like close friends, historic brands with lineage over 100 years. Others are the new papers on the block that should be tried at least once.

From the very affordable to the very fancy, here are 10 of the best rolling papers for weed:

Juicy Jays

Colorful, fruity Juicy Jays are made out of hemp fiber and are beloved by many. The popular 1 ¼ inch papers are adored by smokers who seek to match a flavor profile with the natural terpenes in their cannabis . I have found they taste strongest on my tongue right after I roll it, or just after I lick my lips after hitting the joint, and not necessarily in the smoke itself. Favorite flavors of mine include Sticky Candy, Pineapple, White Grape, Peanut Butter, Peaches & Cream, and Wham Bam Watermelon.

Blazy Susan’s Pink Rolling Papers

The pink papers you have been seeing all over Instagram? The cannabis accessory company Blazy Susan coined them. These are vegan, non-GMO, and made with organic pink pigments in a factory in France. Some may consider these girly, but joints made with Blazy Susan’s rolling papers are quite simply a stunning way to smoke. Most importantly, they offer function alongside their cute aesthetic form by burning slow and evenly and tasting super light.

OCB

If you like good rolls with an air of sophistication, then the French-made OCB papers are perfect for you. Founded in 1918 (yep, we been rolling that long), OCB — which stands for Odet, Cascedec, Bollore — is sold on six continents.

Today, it’s just a super chic, thin paper most cannabis consumers know for their holographic-reflective accents. The flax plant fiber paper themselves are so thin, they are transparent, and include an adhesive strip of Arabic gum that is vegetarian and non-GMP. Most OCB packs of papers come with 32 leaves and 32 perforated tips attached so you can roll a crutch for every joint.

Raw

Founded in 1995, Raw papers are produced in Alcoy, Spain, a town for which the history of paper production is attributed, dating back to the 1600s. People love RAW papers because they have no added chalk, dyes, or additives. The lineup of Raw papers , according to the website, are made of just plants and plant starch, are vegan, non-GMO, chlorine-free, gluten-free, made using windmill power, and with a special criss-cross watermark that helps them smoke more evenly.

One thing we love? The paper packs and cones come in quite literally every size imaginable, including extra-long “RAW Classic Challenge Con” that is 2 feet long (600 mm). The company has done its share of special collaborations and artist series including a line with Wiz Khalifa, Clipper lighters, B-Real’s Phunky Feel glass tips.

Pure Hemp

Pure Hemp is as classic and minimalist as its name implies. Made in Barcelona, Spain, by a 125-year-old Spanish paper company Miquel y Costas Miquel S.A., these rolling papers put “earth’s oldest crop,” hemp, on a pedestal. These papers are thick to the touch, making them a bit easier to roll, but burn even and clean. Beloved Pure Hemp packs also have a clever “last 5” warning strips with a little cartoon dude. Try them for yourself to see.

Elements

Elements , as its name implies, is obsessed with earth-friendly materials and green energy in making its papers. Made with sugar gum for its adhesive, these sweet packs come with perforated crutches for rolling, and the paper itself is made out of rice, making them almost completely translucent. To be even more eco-friendly, the papers production facility in the Spanish region of Alcoy (the birthplace of rolling papers) is entirely wind-powered.

Elements are also uniquely dope for its “perfect fold” engineering , as well as its watermark which is in a criss-cross shape, meant to prevent runs and allow for a smoother burn. One last plus: their packs are great for throwing in your pocket because of their magnetic closing mechanism.

Randy’s

Ah, Randy’s , the original wired joint papers. Founded in 1975 in San Francisco, these bad boys are an engineering marvel, so simple yet so extraordinarily easy to use. And they smoke well, too. The classic ”Randy’s Wire” is made out of 100% steel made in America, which gradually bends and folds over as you smoke the joint. About halfway through, the wire becomes a joint holder that enables you to finish the rest of the j with ease, even when it gets teeny-tiny.

Lift Tickets

These are the only paper on the list that you need to purchase in a dispensary because they are finely coated with cannabis concentrate. Lift Tickets are sticky but surprisingly easy to roll, because the added layer of stickiness helps cohese all the ground-up cannabis together. Strains that the 5-pack of Lift Ticket papers come in are terpene-infused varieties like indica Larry OG, the concentrates produced by cannabis company LoudPack . Only available in California, these papers are one of the best flavored rolling papers around.

Zig-Zag

People have been rolling these babies for 130 years. A Zig-Zag pack looks and feels like an old, familiar friend. They are one of the most widely-accessible (they’re available over the counter is most convenient and grocery stores) and popular rolling papers in the world. The slow-burning orange pack is a go-to for cannabis consumers to roll with.

Other Zig-Zag options today include their unbleached and organic hemp papers. At 32 papers per pack, they are going to be one of the most affordable rolling papers on the list. The man on its cover, a 19th-century French soldier and mythic rolling paper innovator Le Zouave, is a countercultural icon.

“80 Benny” Papers from Empire Rolling

These are a cool party trick. Smoking benjamins has never been easier, thanks to the $100 bill papers from Empire Rolling. Their “80 Benny” papers are colorful and look exactly like a modern $100 bill, Ben Franklin smirking-and-all. The 80 Bennys are made with natural plant fibers, non-toxic vegetable oil coloring, and organic sugar glue. Their “wallet” packs have 20 perforated filter crutches in them for your rolling convenience. They are thick and make for a tougher roll, but super worthwhile to make your friends think you are a baller smoking tiny Benjamins.

How to Roll the Perfect Joint

Apprehensive about rolling a joint? Have no fear; our concise step-by-step guide will teach you exactly what to do, with tips, tools, and recommendations to make the process easier.

For maximum enjoyment of a prime strain of cannabis, knowing how to roll the perfect joint is key. For a smooth smoke, it should have a shape that allows it to burn evenly. Rolling a good one takes skill, but we will gladly show you how to get the hang of it. Additionally, we have some useful recommendations for rolling papers and tools to make it easier. By following our step-by-step guide below, you will master the art of rolling joints in no time.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO ROLL A JOINT

Before we get started with the instructions, here’s a list of what you’ll need:

• Your favourite strain of weed
• Rolling papers
• Crutch/filter
• Pen or similar object, to pack the joint
• Grinder
• Rolling tray

STEP 1: BREAK UP YOUR MARIJUANA

If you are using high-grade cannabis such as ours, simply feeling it between your fingers will begin to release its sweet smell. Although you could go at it with your hands, we recommend breaking your bud up into a suitable size using a quality grinder. This method saves time, plus it will prevent your fingers from getting too sticky to roll the paper later. You want to render your bud down into small particles, but not into dust. This will allow for optimal airflow and burn rate.

STEP 2: CREATE A CRUTCH FOR THE JOINT

A crutch is basically a mouthpiece for your joint, also referred to as a filter or tip. Some smokers may say a crutch is unnecessary or optional, but we strongly recommend it. A crutch:

• assures the end of the joint remains open
• prevents you from burning your fingers or lips while smoking
• prevents anything from falling out of the joint
• keeps the shape of the joint sturdy
• makes smoking easier by increasing airflow through the joint

You can make crutches out of thick paper or thin cardboard, like most business cards are made of. For long rolling papers, a piece of approximately 5.5 x 1.7cm will suffice. You can also buy special crutch paper, and many rolling papers already come with some.

While a lot of people simply roll the crutch paper into a cylinder, this method leaves a hole that might let weed fall through or get pinched closed while smoking. Therefore, it’s better to make a few accordion folds at one end before rolling the rest completely around it. Make as many folds as you want the width of the final crutch to be.

STEP 3: FILL UP YOUR JOINT

There are many types of rolling papers—have your pick. We recommend our organic hemp papers because they’re thin yet sturdy, assuring your joint burns evenly and the aroma of your strain is unaffected. Moreover, they come with filter papers as well.

Take out your rolling paper and hold it so the glue side is facing your feet and the fold is in your direct sight. Fold the paper gently in the opposite direction and roll it between your fingers gingerly until it retains the shape you need.

Place the cannabis in your paper with one hand, distributing it in such a way that there is less at the end where the crutch is going to be. You want to end up with a cone-shaped joint later. Straight joints are easier to roll, so for your first attempts, this is fine too. Ultimately, a cone-shaped joint will offer a way smoother smoke.

STEP 4: ROLL YOUR JOINT

Holding your paper containing the cannabis, start rolling it gently as you move your fingers from left to right to distribute the particles evenly. Insert your crutch from Step 2 into one end of the paper and then get to rolling. Make sure your fingers are near the filter. The closer together they are, the better.

Roll the paper back and forth to ensure the edge of the paper crosses over the crutch. You’re on your way to the perfect joint now! To make things easier, you can use our handy wooden rolling tray. It’s the perfect size for rolling joints and will catch any cannabis that might fall out. This way, you won’t need a table as you can just sit the tray on your lap.

STEP 5: LICK AND SEAL YOUR JOINT

Once you’ve rolled back and forth enough for the shape of the joint to appear, it’s time to close and seal it. Continue rolling between your fingers until the paper is pulled tight and the edge can be easily folded in with the tip. Roll until the glued side is just tucked slightly underneath the unglued side. Then, lick thoroughly through the outer layer to hit the glue layer, sealing up the sides and leaving the end open.

Make sure you do the tucking and sealing along the length of the joint slowly and gently. To prevent smoking too much paper, you can burn off the excess after sealing it. You don’t want to seal it up too tight, as it will be very hard to draw in smoke and take a hit. If it’s rolled too loose, though, it will burn unevenly or too quickly.

STEP 6: PACK YOUR JOINT

To ensure a smooth and even burn, you should now pack the joint. Use the pen (or any other object that will do the trick) to carefully press down the cannabis through the open end. You can also put back in anything that fell out earlier, or simply save it for another time. While holding the joint upright from the filtered end, gently tap it on a flat surface to compact the cannabis and push the crutch in for reinforcement.

STEP 7: TWIST THE END OF YOUR JOINT

Seal the open end by twisting the extra paper so it resembles a candle wick. This way, there is no possibility for any weed to fall out. You can keep your joint stored away like this if you are not going to smoke it right away. Once you are ready to smoke, the twisted end will be your lighting point.

STEP 8: LIGHT AND ENJOY

At this point, you are ready to indulge in your smoke. Now there is nothing between you and the sweet cannabis you just rolled. All you have to do is light it and enjoy. Your joint tastes the best the first time it’s lit. Therefore, try to smoke it all at once and not relight it. Relighting is bad for the taste, and we want you to enjoy every single puff so you get the most from your buds.

STEP 9: SHARE YOUR JOINT

For an even better experience, share your joint with some friends. Not only will it prevent you from having to relight it later, but you will have the chance to really take in its aroma and effects while you are waiting in-between turns. Lastly, it’s just a lot more fun to enjoy the high with your mates. Good times ahead!

Joints are one of the most popular ways to consume cannabis. There are several different types of joints in the world of weed, and a variety of methods to make them. Rolling a joint can be a highly personal, intricate craft, but with a few simple steps, any new toker can roll their very own. Read on to learn about the art of rolling a joint.

What is a joint?

A joint is a cannabis cigarette often hand-rolled by an individual. Some dispensaries offer prerolls, or joints rolled in-shop, for consumers to purchase, saving a few steps. A cannabis joint that includes both cannabis and tobacco is called a spliff, while a blunt is a joint rolled with heavy, dark, tobacco papers.

What you need to roll a joint

To roll a joint, you’ll need to assemble a handful of essential materials. First, select your favorite cannabis strain and set aside the amount of flower you want to smoke, typically about a third of a gram. Use a grinder to break apart your bud evenly. A rolling tray will help you keep your workspace neat and tidy.

Round up your joint paper of choice. Dispensaries and smoke shops offer hemp, unbleached paper, and other materials to fit various preferences. Grab a filter, also called a crutch, or a thick piece of paper to create one, and you’ve got everything you need to roll a joint. If you don’t have a glass crutch handy, it’s easy to make a crutch on your own.

How to roll a joint

Step 1: Grind the cannabis

Use a grinder to grind up and separate the flower evenly. A grinder produces a consistent size and texture, which provides a smoother, more even smoke. If you don’t have a grinder, pick the bud apart with your fingers. Make the pieces more or less the same small size and work gently to minimize damage to the cannabis’ trichomes.

Step 2: Make a crutch

Many smoke shops sell pre-made crutches to serve as the mouthpiece of a joint. While crutches aren’t essential, they help reinforce the mouthpiece and make a joint easier to hold. Crutches also boost the airflow through a joint and minimize the risk of burning your lips or inhaling tiny bits of marijuana during a hit.

To make a crutch, fold a piece of thick paper or cardstock into an accordion shape then wrap the last bit of paper around the accordion part. Photo by: Gina Coleman/Weedmaps

To make a crutch, grab a piece of thick paper or cardstock and rip off a rectangle-shaped strip about the width of your joint’s mouthpiece. Fold most of the paper into an accordion shape then wrap the last bit of paper around the accordion part.

Step 3: Load the joint

Lay the rolling paper on the tray with the adhesive side facing away from you. Position the crutch where you want the mouthpiece to be and sprinkle marijuana onto the paper. Evenly spread the flower throughout the joint and avoid overstuffing it.

To roll a cone joint, sprinkle less weed near the mouthpiece and more towards the tip, tapering as you move.

Step 4: Roll the joint

It’s finally time to get rolling. Use your thumb and index finger to pinch the paper into a taco shape, sifting the paper back and forth to distribute the bud evenly. It’s okay if some flower falls out,you can stuff it in later. Work the weed into a cylinder shape, not so loose that it burns unevenly and not so tight that it restricts airflow.

Tuck one side of the rolling paper into the joint and slowly roll it back towards the adhesive side, tucking in the bud as you go. Lick or wet the sticky adhesive and start at the mouthpiece end to slowly seal the joint.

Why do people like joints?

Cannabis consumers love joints for a wide variety of reasons. For many, joints serve as the entry point into the cannabis world and smoking. Some like the way terpenes smell as the joint smoke spirals into the air. Others appreciate the fact you only need to spark up once to enjoy a joint, compared to the constant lighting of a pipe or the heavy-duty torching that dabs require.

Joints are also highly mobile, easy to share in a group setting, and easy to store if you want to smoke some and save the rest for a later day. According to an analysis by the RAND Corporation, an average joint fits about 0.32 grams of weed, making it a potent cannabis experience for an individual or enough for everyone when shared in a session. When completed, there’s little to clean up except for the roach and some ash.

Many joint rollers find the process of crafting joints therapeutic and consider the ritual an essential part of their consumption process.

Why do people hate joints?

Joints aren’t the most efficient way of consuming weed, and many users choose other methods to stretch their budget and maximize the experience of their bud. If you don’t smoke a joint fast, the flame on the tip will burn off precious trichomes and terpenes. Joints aren’t the best choice for marijuana consumers seeking a leisurely, lengthy smoking session.

wet weed

What to Do if Your Weed Gets Wet

We’re all human. Mistakes happen. Anyone who smokes frequently eventually loses their weed, accidentally throws it away, or even spills a drink all over their stash. The “my weed got wet” moment isn’t a fun one. If you’re reading this now for that very reason, you’re probably asking a few questions. Can you still smoke weed if it gets wet? What happens when weed gets wet? What the best way to dry wet weed? Fortunately for you, we know a few methods for safely drying it out. These tricks won’t work every time, but it’s worth a shot, right?

The Problem With Wet Weed

You might be tempted to just ignore the fact that your weed is wet – we suggest not doing this. First off, over time, wet weed will develop mold. Moldy weed is dangerous to your health, so you should do everything you can to prevent its development. Additionally, wet marijuana is almost impossible to grind; and even if it was already ground before it got wet, it’s incredibly difficult to burn. Finally, even if you do manage to somehow get it to burn, it’ll taste awful. Damp, acrid weed with excess water vapor due to moisture is a very unpleasant experience. Trust us.

There are three specific occurrences that, unfortunately, make it unsafe to smoke your bud. Regardless of whether you dry it out successfully, weed is no longer safe to smoke if it’s been run through the washing machine or dropped in a pool or the ocean. Marijuana that’s been contaminated by sea salt or chemicals like chlorine and detergent aren’t safe to smoke.

How to Dry Your Wet Weed

The Paper Method

If you’re wondering how to dry wet weed, there are two primary options: the paper method and the rice method. The paper method is the fastest way to dry weed. Just follow these steps:

  1. Break up your nugs into smaller pieces
  2. Tightly wrap your wet marijuana in thick paper towels
  3. Place your wrapped weed in a dry, dark area
  4. Turn on a nearby fan or dehumidifier (not necessary, but helps prevent mold)
  5. Change the paper every few hours until your weed is dry

One downside to this method is a higher potential for mold. Because it’ll be in direct contact with the paper that’s absorbing water, there’s a chance that moisture will build and mold will grow. Make sure to keep an eye out for this if you choose the paper method.

The Rice Method

This method takes a little more time, but mold is much less likely to grow in the process. The rice method works for weed the same way it does for wet electronics. Follow these steps:

  1. Place your weed in a container of rice (mason jars are ideal)
  2. Put your uncovered container of rice in a dry, dark area
  3. Turn on a nearby fan or dehumidifier (not necessary, but helps prevent mold)
  4. Leave the marijuana in rice for 24 hours
  5. If there’s any leftover moisture, break up your weed nugs and commence with the paper method

The biggest downside to this method is that your bud will likely be covered in residual rice flower and have a faint rice smell (however, this is part of what makes it work so effectively).

What Not To Do

If you’re wondering how to dry weed as fast as possible, please refer to one of the two methods above. Other, quicker methods won’t be nearly as effective. Blow drying, putting it in the sun, and especially microwaving weed are all going to lower the quality of your bud and make it much harsher to smoke. Even leaving it out in the open with a fan may result in a lower-quality smoking experience. Also note that heat, light and humidity all increase the likelihood of growing mold. Instead, take your time, use one of the two methods above, and dry your wet bud in a dark, dry, well-ventilated area.

As we’ve previously stated, it’s really unhealthy to inhale mold. We know it’s sad, but you’re better off throwing away moldy weed than smoking it and getting really sick. Plus, moldy weed will taste absolutely disgusting. Both before and after you dry it, check your weed for mold. Generally speaking, mold will form as a powdery white substance on the surface of your nugs. Dark spots or yellow/gray fuzz may also appear where it shouldn’t, along with slime and sickly smell. If your weed has been wet and shows any of these sings, toss it.

How To Avoid Getting Your Weed Wet

Correct cannabis storage will ensure your weed is less likely to get wet and more likely to stay in quality condition. Safe storage will also stop moisture from causing mold overtime. The answer to “does marijuana go bad” is a resounding yes. Poor storage can result in bad weed. Follow these tips to ensure your weed stays smokable and accident-proof.

  • Use airtight jars to store weed in dry, dark places
  • Only take out how much weed you’re going to smoke at any given time
  • If you have to travel with weed, keep it in a small, air-tight container
  • Keep your weed away from pools and never put it in your swimwear pockets
  • Be gentle with your weed and treat it like it’s worth something (because it is!)

These storage and drying methods are tried-and-true, but we also know the cannabis community is a fairly crafty crew. Share your personal tips and tricks for drying and safely storing weed, below. We’re always looking for better ways to keep our weed safe and smokable.

“Wet” vs. “Dry” Cured Cannabis

I decided to do an experiment while curing cannabis, and I got some Interesting Results!

I put WB#1 into jars too wet. I put WB#2 into jars way too DRY. Both with boveda packs. Stored them under my bed, now over a month. (rolled them in my hands occasionally to prevent lumping, but No Burping)

You’ll notices the weight and size differences of the nugs. WB1 cured nice and dense and aromatic as hell. Sticky Icky. The WB1 has a very dense smoke when burning, so seems stronger.

WB2 buds are light, airy, and also smell great… not as strong though, or maybe it’s the density. But sticky and really kicks me on my ass. I mean, blurred vision when smoking heavy o_0 ! Love it!

Not attempting to start a pro/con of boveda packs… just wanted to show how differently they turned out. Both Awesome as hell, and better than anything I’ve every purchased, bar none.

Thanks to GWE website & community 🙂

Update: 4 months later…

Hi Nebula, if you’ll recall, the Whiteberry that I jarred with boveda packs while still too wet… the dense nugs? Well, opened jar for the 1st time after 4 months… Ermahgerd! What a wonderful treat. Very sticky when you break it by hand, gotta tear chunks off to smoke.. and it slow burns forever 😉 the jar smells just like strawberry jam.

Just thought I’d share, as you mentioned you may try it sometime. I’ll certainly do another jar or two next harvest… just to try to repeat the process… 1st time was kinda an accident/laziness really 😉

  6. Bottom line

Smoking a bowl is a classic method for smoking marijuana. Bowls are mainstays in cannabis culture. Here’s everything you need to know about packing and smoking a bowl.

What is a bowl?

A bowl is one of the main components of a pipe or bong. Specifically, a bowl is the rounded-out part into which you pack your marijuana. The name of this component comes from an obvious source—a bowl is basically a small dish or basin designed for holding cannabis.

When you ignite the marijuana and give your pipe or bong a drag, the smoke travels through the bowl, down the hole, into the pipe, and from there, into your lungs. Photo by: Gina Coleman/Weedmaps

The bowl is attached to the body of your pipe or bong. At the bottom of your bowl, there will be a hole leading to the body of the pipe. When you ignite the marijuana and give your pipe or bong a drag, the smoke travels through the bowl, down the hole, into the pipe, and from there, into your lungs.

Bowls look and function a little bit differently depending on if they’re used in a regular pipe or in a bong. Bowls on the end of a pipe typically have a hole on the side called a carb. The carb plays a key role in controlling airflow, so you can let the pipe fill with smoke and then clear it when you’re ready to take a hit. On the other hand, bowls used with a bong usually do not have a carb. Instead, you control airflow by sliding the bowl in and out of your bong’s downstem.

What you need to pack a bowl

To pack and smoke a bowl, you will need:

  • Marijuana
  • A grinder
  • A pipe with a bowl on the end. The simplest kind is called a “spoon pipe,” but there are also variations, such as bubblers which include a small water chamber in addition to the bowl and body.
  • Depending on your smoking preferences, you may need a bong with a downstem and bowl.
  • A lighter or hemp wick to combust your marijuana
  • As an extra option, you can use a tamping tool to more evenly pack the marijuana into the bowl.

Step-by-step instructions for packing a bowl

Option 1: Packing a bowl on a regular pipe

1. Grind your weed. If you’re using a spoon pipe, or some variation of a spoon pipe, you will begin by grinding your marijuana. The goal is to get a consistent grind so that all the little pieces of marijuana are more or less the same size.

The best way to accomplish this is with a grinder. If you have a grinder, place a medium-sized nug into the chamber where the grinding teeth are located. Put the cap back on and twist it back and forth until the nug is completely ground. If you do not have a grinder, you can use a pair of clean, sharp scissors or your hands to break your nug into small, evenly-sized pieces.

2. Pack your bowl. Once you’ve ground your marijuana, carefully pick up a pinch of weed between your fingertips. Place the weed into the bowl and gently tamp it down with your finger, the flat end of a lighter, or a tamping tool. Don’t pack it too tightly, otherwise you’ll have difficulty pulling the smoke through the bowl and into the pipe.

Tip: Place your pipe over a plate or tray while you’re packing it so you can easily gather up any pieces of weed that happen to fall out of the bowl during the process.

3. Smoke your pipe. Hold the bowl in one hand with your thumb covering the carb hole. Place the pipe to your lips. With your other hand, use a lighter or hemp wick to light a corner of the bowl. Once the weed sparks, pull the flame away and begin dragging in with your lungs. When you’re ready to inhale, remove your thumb from the carb and give a big drag. All the smoke that has built up inside the pipe will now rush into your lungs.

4. Ash your bowl. When the marijuana has all been burned, dump out the ash so your bowl is ready to be re-packed for your next session.

Option 2: Packing a bowl in a bong

1. Grind your weed. As with a regular spoon pipe, the goal here is to get a consistent grind so that all the little pieces of marijuana are more or less the same size.

The best way to accomplish this is with a grinder. If you have a grinder, place a medium-sized nug into the chamber where the grinding teeth are located. Put the cap on and twist it back and forth until the nug is completely ground.

Don’t pack it down too tightly, otherwise you’ll have difficulty pulling the smoke through the bowl and into the bong.

Tip: Set your bong on top of a plate or tray while you’re packing the bowl so you can easily gather up any pieces of weed that happen to fall out of the bowl during the process.

3. Smoke your bong. Slide your weed-packed bowl into the downstem of your bong. When it’s in place, use a lighter or hemp wick to ignite the weed. As you do this, put your mouth to the mouthpiece and start pulling in with your lungs. You will see the smoke travel from the bowl, flow through the downstem, and begin bubbling up through the water in the base of your bong. When you’re ready to take a hit, continue pulling in with your lungs and slide the bowl out of the downstem. This will create an open flow of air, allowing you to clear the chamber and inhale all the smoke.

4. Ash your bowl. When you’re finished and you’ve fully combusted all the marijuana in your bowl, dump out the ash so your bowl is ready to re-pack for your next session.

Why people like smoking from glass bowls

If you’re packing and smoking a bowl, odds are that you’re using a glass smoking device. Glass is known for providing a simple, straightforward, and clean way to smoke cannabis. Specifically, because glass is an inert substance, it can be heated without leaching residual odors, flavors, or contaminants into the smoke. As such, many smokers enjoy glass pieces because they can be used over and over again without detracting from marijuana’s natural tastes and smells. Additionally, when a glass bowl or pipe becomes dirty or gunked up with sticky resin, the material can easily be cleaned and returned to like-new condition.

Why people hate smoking from glass bowls

There are a few reasons some cannabis smokers don’t like smoking from glass. Glass can shatter, chip, and break, especially if you drop your piece or ash in too aggressively.

In rare cases, poorly-made glass can shatter under intense heat, which could be dangerous.

Glass pieces are not as mobile or discreet as other methods of smoking. Even small glass pipes like chillums get dirty and smelly after a few uses, thanks to the sticky resin that coats the bowl or pipe after smoking. This makes glass hard to carry with you or use for on-the-go smoking.

Some smokers simply prefer the experience of rolling and smoking a joint, spliff, or blunt, as opposed to packing and smoking a bowl.

Bottom line

With a few basic cannabis supplies, such as a grinder, packing and smoking a bowl is easy to achieve, especially if you’re using one made of glass.

Recreational Marijuana 101: How to Smoke a Pipe

One of the most recognizable smoking devices is a cannabis pipe. These pipes are categorized in two groups: carb and carb-less. Those with a “carb,” or small hole, allow for the clearing of smoke in the pipe.

Carb-less pipes are referred to as “chillums” or “one-hitters.” These are available in a variety of shapes, and are usually straight tubes that mimic the appearance of cigarettes or discrete designs.

Pipes with a carb are often called “bowls” or “spoons.” They’re generally spoon-shaped in form. Pipes with carbs are designed for larger amounts of cannabis, and they can generally go around a circle of friends for multiple puffs.

Pipe Smoking for Beginners

When compared to joints or blunts, the primary benefits of consuming cannabis with a pipe are increased smoke and less ash. While joints, blunts, and other rolled options may be seen as more portable, their combustion method involves a significant amount of ash.

Additionally, a clean pipe will be less harsh than a joint or blunt.

How cannabis pipes work

Pipes provide their function using three aspects of the device:

  1. The mouthpiece: where you put your mouth
  2. The bowl: where you put your cannabis flower
  3. The carb hole: some pipes have a carb hole to allow the consumer to “clear” the pipe of residual smoke.

The cannabis is heated and smoke is inhaled through the mouthpiece.

How to choose a pipe

Choosing a pipe is based on personal taste. Standard chillums may be made out of clear glass or cigarette-shaped, while more intricate one hitters and bowls vary in color, shape, size, and details. If you want something that can be discreetly held in the palm of your hand, a one-hitter may be your best option. They’re carb-less, small, and typically stored in a wooden “dugout”.

If you’re looking for a piece that will last a long time, allow for larger smoke sessions, and has a carb hole, then a bowl is likely your best option. While you won’t be able to test the pipe before you buy, you can hold it as if you were using it to see how it feels in your hands and whether you can easily use the carb hole.

How to pack a pipe

When it comes to packing your pipe, ground cannabis is always your best option. It makes for a uniform burn and airflow, which means you’ll get the most consistent hits. Grind your cannabis in a grinder if you have one, or use your fingers to tear the flower into tiny bits. Fill the bowl of your pipe with a few pinches of ground herb.

If it is a larger bowl, you may need to grind up more cannabis, whereas smaller bowls and one-hitters require a small amount to fill the bowl.

How to smoke a pipe

Once loaded, ignite the bowl of cannabis using a lighter or hemp wick, while inhaling from the mouthpiece. If there is a carb, be sure to cover the carb hole using your thumb or finger while inhaling the first half of your puff. Then release your finger and allow air to flow through the carb hole while you inhale the second half of your hit.

For cannabis beginners, be sure to start with small amounts in each bowl, and wait several minutes between inhalations. Cannabis varies in potency, so “go slow and low” until you’ve developed familiarity with cannabis products.

How to clean a pipe

The more often you clean your pipe, the easier it will be to maintain. While cleaning after every use may be excessive, a 2019 study by Moose Labs shows that even a 10-minute smoking session with four friends will more than double the amount of bacteria on the mouthpiece of the pipe.

Soaking in isopropyl alcohol and acetone are great options for cleaning your pipes. If there’s a bit of resin that is stuck inside, add a few pinches of salt (epsom salt is the best) and shake to agitate the residue and help remove any leftover remnants and bacteria

A three-minute isopropyl alcohol soak is the most effective way to reduce bacteria and other residuals.

How to store a pipe

If your pipe is made of a material that could shatter, such as glass, clay or crystals, you’ll want to store it in something protective, such as a padded case or bag to keep it safe from impact shocks and bumps. Pipes made of wood, metals like aluminium, silicon and other similar materials should be placed in their storage pouches once appropriately cooled and cleaned.

For added discretion, consider a smell-proof container that stays airtight to avoid the smells of fresh or freshly-burned cannabis escaping.

Try For Yourself

Now that you’re familiar enough with cannabis pipes to be able to choose one for yourself, give it a try on your own. Feel free to refer back to this guide when shopping for and using your new pipe for the first time. Once you get the hang of it, you should be able to enjoy your pipe and legal cannabis without much guidance.

  • Can the Liquid 9 vaporize e-liquid?

Theoretically, yes, but it’s intended for use with concentrates.

Can the Liquid 9 only be used with L9 cartridges?

The Liquid 9 will work with other 510 cartridges that are similar in size to the L9 cartridges, but some larger cartridges won’t fit.

Will the Jupiter Liquid 9 vaporize wax?

It won’t vaporize wax, but you can turn your wax into oil with some wax liquidizer. That’ll work just fine.

Not Your Normal Head Shop: Phoenix entrepreneur’s big endeavor

It’s the final half of your school ’ s basketball game. All eyes beat down on the opposing team as you stand to watch them shoot a free throw. The player takes his eyes off the hoop and looks at the crowd for a moment. So many students, parents, fans … and six-foot Hillary Clinton?

Giant heads are making all kinds of similar appearances across the world thanks to companies like Build-A-Head and its creator, Bryan Price.

Build-A-Head is a website based in Phoenix that allows users to log on, upload a photo and receive a giant face cutout, shipped out the very next day.

Users can choose between two to six foot tall Huge Heads, key chains, ornaments or Big Head Slims, which are heads printed on thinner paper and attached to a stick.

Price got the idea after seeing the demand for giant heads at sports games and festivals and the amount of fun people were having with them.

The only problem was the process. Printing and building a giant head attached to cardboard, foam or poster board proved to be a weekend-long process that was costing people a lot of money.

“ The cost was high, making them essentially impossible to create, ” Price said.

After graduating college, he took a job delivering pizzas in Scottsdale, allowing him enough time on the side to work on Build-A-Head.

What started out as a two person ordeal in his garage has grown into a business now employing 11 people, mobile and on-site, and operating out of a warehouse.

Now, getting a cardboard head is affordable, fast and a matter of a few clicks.

And the business is still growing.

Build-A-Heads have made appearances all over the world, including Rihanna ’ s foundation events the past two years.

“ It ’ s cool because, one, it ’ s Rihanna, and two, there ’ s a ton of people who attend that event, ” said Price.

Social media has also helped the head phenomenon. Build-A-Head has been seen on networks by the likes of ESPN, CNBC and Sports Illustrated.

“ It ’ s been crazy with social media, we see ourselves at events we didn ’ t even know we ’ d be at. ” Price said.

It ’ s not just sports though. Heads have found uses everywhere from marathons, pageants, fundraisers and graduations to political campaigns, birthday parties and weddings.

While he doesn ’ t necessarily have a favorite face he ’ s printed, he thinks the different occasions at which the heads have made appearances are special.

“ It ’ s a simple product, ” said Price, “ But they mean a lot to people at the events they go to, whether it ’ s a first birthday party or a college graduation for someone who ’ s the first person in their family to graduate. ”

Customers are easily at the forefront of Build-A-Head. The site boasts fantastic customer service with quick shipping and an ordering process that takes minutes.

While consulting the large selection of emoji cutouts, politician heads and life-sized cutouts, you might have one question: why heads?

Price cites the instantaneous recognizability and the joy that people have seeing the faces come through as the reason for their success.

“ We certainly live in a meme era, ” Price said, “ And the heads borderline on that. They ’ re a fun way for people to express themselves at events. ”

Build-A-Head has consistently grown and evolved and Price believes it will continue to do so. With Christmas coming up, the site offers face cutout ornaments.

The site also recently added Larry Fitzgerald, the Cardinals’ wide receiver, to their selection of celebrity heads in support of his foundation, the First Down Fund. Price says it’s a huge step in the direction of adding other licensed entertainers and athletes.

As for those nearing their last semester of senior year with business ideas of their own, Price has only one piece of advice: “ Plain and simple, work hard. When you think you ’ re worked hard enough, work harder. ”

And, to fit each unique bong, each glass downstem we sell is made with varying joint measurements, from 18/18MM to 18/14MM.

How to Shop for a Downstem

If you’re interested in purchasing a glass downstem, there are some important things to consider prior to purchasing. Make sure you think about the following questions before adding one to your cart:

“What Size Downstem Should I Order?”

Generally, a bong downstem will have a joint size of 14MM, 18MM or even 10MM. The joint size must be a snug fit that keeps an air-tight seal while smoking. However, you should also consider the length of the bong downstem itself. Your downstem should be long enough to hit the water and produce bubbles upon inhalation. If it also hits the base of the bong, this is too long and you won’t get the same effects from using the right size.

“Should I Order a Downstem Diffuser?”

A diffuser is optional, but it can attach to your downstem to produce smaller bubbles. These tiny bubbles create smoother draws, so you can enjoy each puff with less harsh results.

“Can My Water Pipe Use a Downstem?”

If you have a pipe with a male joint, you cannot add a downstem. These will only fit into bongs with female joints.

The 15 Best Grinders That’ll Prevent You From Ruining Your Good Weed

There’s no sense in holding onto a crummy grinder when there are plenty of better options out there.

Sans a decent grinder, you might as well chop an entire gram in two, stuff one half as is into a rolling paper, and throw the other half into the garbage. Good grinder blades will seamlessly cut through your dry herb, sifting out the bad chunks and preserving the extra-potent pollen. They’ll create a little mound of fine, fluffy weed to roll, vape, or hell, bake into a cake. No dirty smoke, no lost product, not a bit of that eighth wasted.

You can seriously invest in this kind of accessory if you want, but you can also find some solid, inexpensive options. These 15 weed grinders—many of them with four pieces to grind bud, sift pollen, and store the results properly—each have their own strengths. One ought to suit your cannabis-consuming ways. And we’ll take the opportunity now to pair this guide with an always-timely reminder to smoke responsibly. We don’t mean legally (we’re no sticklers for the word of the law when that law itself is outdated and discriminatory). We mean, choose to support grassroots legalization and social justice efforts in the cannabis industry, and buy from dispensaries owned by minorities and companies that give back to communities when possible. Now, onto the grinders.

Just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean it’s crap. This zinc alloy grinder comes with five pieces—including two mesh screens to sift pollen from your weed, and a little scraper to use for the catch tray so not a speck is wasted—with sharp teeth and a magnetic seal. If it seems too large, then remove a mesh screen to shorten it.

Only 1.5 inches across, this grinder is an inexpensive and downright tiny means of readying cannabis bud to smoke. It’s not what we’d call “heavy-duty,” but it’s a decent grinder to have for traveling, in addition to a sturdier grinder for regular, at-home use.

The Kingtop grinder is nearly as big as the palm of your hand, great for when you have a considerable amount of bud and don’t need to be discrete. Its four pieces include a magnetically sealed cap, a grinder, a mesh screen, and a catch tray—a big one, at that—and its 45 teeth ensure smooth grinding.

Mendo Mulcher makes some tough grinders—all out of solid, aircraft-grade aluminum—but this one might be the most useful. At only 1.75 inches across, it’s best for travel, and its extra-grippy construction ensures you won’t slip up while using it despite its small size. With only two pieces, you’re short a mesh filter. But it does have a cool, hardware quality to it.

This grinder has a lotta happy customers. Makes sense. It grinds weed evenly and with precision, it’s built like a tank, it has a mesh screen and strong magnetic seal, and it hovers around 20 bucks. It’s a workhorse, built from materials that’ll keep it gliding through many a grind.

For a more tactile option, get Aerospaced’s grinder. The hand crank operates a set of blades, which chop up weed and filter it through a mesh screen. The clear lid allows you to monitor the entire operation.

If you’d call your personal style minimalist and refined, then here’s a grinder to match it. Made from aluminum alloy and unmarked with labels and logos, it is an accessory worthy of a high-class vape and top-grade flower.

Magic Flight’s grinder is part of its wooden Launch Box vape kit, fitting snugly over the opening of the vape so you can transfer freshly ground bud without a mess. If you’re looking for a beautifully carved, non-aluminum grinder (the grate is made from stainless steel) that’s part of a matched set—hell of a flex, right?—opt for this.

Phoenician medical-grade grinders get you a medium sheer on your weed—not too fine or too chunky. But more importantly, their grippy sides and deep bowls are intended to help users with arthritis (or folks with clumsy hands).

The Tectonic9 leans to the Inspector Gadget side of things. You put the weed into the chamber and grind it up, standard procedure. But accessing it is what is pretty damn nifty: That silver dispenser flips up from underneath the grinder and fits over a hole (which you manually open and close). Tip, and freshly ground herb neatly falls out.

The Pillar wasn’t built to be shoved in a junk drawer or lost under the couch. It glimmers, it is gold. Or rather, brushed brass. It’s a statement grinder if we’ve ever seen one. Besides aluminum grinding teeth and a scraper, the catch compartment is impressively spacious.

You get into spoil-yourself territory with the Santa Cruz Schredder. Known for its unique tooth design, it churns out perfectly ground, fluffy weed into a canister sealed with extra-strong magnets. You buy it once, then never have to worry about buying a grinder again.

Kannastör’s grinder is a mix-and-match marvel with extra storage options, two removable screens, and the option to break it down into a more portable size. Better yet, it comes with two interchangeable graters (hence the name) plates so you can pick your coarseness—fine or medium. Made with hardened aluminum in a matte design that looks real nice, it’ll last you.

Instead of aluminum or zinc alloy like most cheaper grinders, Iaso’s grinder is constructed out of stainless steel. That means the canister and its teeth will stay strong. Iaso also uses a special labyrinth seal design intended to prevent annoying binding or sticking. It’s a luxe option for sure.

Here’s where things get wild: an electric grinder. Eliminate user error altogether. The Otto automatically adjusts to the herb, sensing exactly what grind is required for the best results. Then, it funnels what it grinds directly into a paper cone for easy rolling (you can skip this step). Of course, then you’re stuck with machine error—charging, storage, maintenance, all that. Nevertheless, it’s a cool toy.

These 15 best weed grinders—most of them with four pieces to grind marijuana bud, sift pollen, and store the results—are available online and fit any budget.

Churchwarden pipe
A churchwarden pipe is a pipe with a long stem. Some churchwarden pipes can be as long as 16 inches (40 cm). In German the style is referred to as “Lesepfeife” or “reading pipe,” presumably because the longer stem allowed an unimpeded view of one’s book, and smoke doesn’t form near the reader’s eyes, allowing one to look down.
Such pipes were very popular as an Oriental influence from the 17th century onwards in Europe. They remained most popular in Eastern Europe, as an emblem of the “Hussars,” cavalry troops with roots in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who went from Russia to France and England during the Napoleonic Wars and brought the pipes with them. It was even known as the “Hussar pipe” at the time. Engraved portraits exist of men smoking such an instrument. This long stem pipe type has its origins in the Ottoman Empire, geographically and historically.
Churchwarden pipes generally produce a cooler smoke due to the distance smoke must travel from the bowl to the mouthpiece. They have the added benefit of keeping the user’s face further away from the heat and smoke produced by combustion in the bowl. They are also more prone to breakage since more pressure is placed on the tenon when the pipe is supported around the mouthpiece. Long ago, churchwarden pipes were made of clay and were common in taverns, and sometimes a set of pipes would have been owned by the establishment and used by different clients like other service items (plates, tankards, etc.).
Churchwarden pipes were reputedly named after churchwardens, or night watchmen of churches in the time that churches never locked their doors. These “churchwardens” couldn’t be expected to go all night without a smoke, so they had pipes that were made with exceptionally long stems so the smoke and the pipe wouldn’t be in their line of sight as they kept watch. Also made popular by the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Churchwardens have become highly desirable in recent years.

Santa Cruz Shredder – Cookies 4-Piece Grinder

Santa Cruz Shredder Grinders/Sifters

Our teeth are radius at the base for strength and are able to take extreme use. They’re twice as strong, will never dull, and never release burrs or flakes of aluminum. Comparable grinders cut once – letting BB-sized chunks pass through the holes without further grinding. Our teeth are designed to cut both ways, which include clearances on both sides of the teeth, but to cause it to consistently “FLUFF TO PERFECTION”

Easier Grip Means Easier Use

SANTA CRUZ SHREDDER prides itself as the best grinder available. Our “knurled” grip is much more pronounced than other grinders, improving hand and finger grip. You can see the superior grip pattern as well as feel how much easier it is to turn. This extremely gripable lid makes it that much easier to rotate the grinder, lowering the torque necessary to use our product and providing a “butter” smooth aromatherapy blend fluffing tool.

Not All Magnets are Created Equal

We don’t use “toy” magnets. Cheap magnets are weak, tend to fall out, and their protective coating flakes off into your aromatherapy blend. We use Neodymium Diametrically Magnetized Cylindrical Rare Earth Magnets. Nickel-Copper-Nickel triple layer coated for maximum durability and protection against abuse & corrosion. Our superior magnets provide a reliable lid closure system that prevents your aromatherapy blends from drying out, accidental spillage, and escaping odors. They are ISO Certified, top notch quality, provide superior performance, and guaranteed for life!

Tired of Scratches and Cross-Threading Problems?

Anodizing is the only way to go! Anodizing is an electrolytic passivation process use to create a strong protective coating for aluminum that prevents corrosion, wear resistance, and “galling” (failing) of threaded parts. After an acid bath we suspend them in special tanks that pass an electrical current through the item creating a strong protective surface. Anodizing changes the microscopic texture of the surface and changes the crystal structure of the aluminum near the surface. It not only bonds to the surface, but actually molecularly becomes the new surface. Raw aluminum is a soft material prone to even the tiniest scratches.

Our ultra-high quality grinders are the only ones truly scratch resistant, using aerospace anodizing techniques for protection. Comparable grinders are raw aluminum (unsanitary) which are highly susceptible to scratches, cross-threading, and are only polished to provide a temporary illusion of quality (also unsanitary). We offer Clear, Red and Black anodized finishes.
