Nutmeg Treated as Drug for Hallucinogenic High

Poison centers see an upswing in teens taking nutmeg for a hallucinogenic high.

K-2 Herb Pulled Off Store Shelves

Dec. 9, 2010— — A sprinkle of nutmeg in eggnog or a pinch in apple pie can add the perfect punch to a holiday dessert. But winter’s favorite spice has also made headlines as an unconventional way of getting high — it’s called a nutmeg high.

Nutmeg contains myristicin, a natural compound that has mind-altering effects if ingested in large doses. The buzz can last one to two days and can be hallucinogenic, much like LSD.

According to reports this week from the ABC affiliate WPLG in Miami, the Florida Poison Information Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital has recently seen a small spike in phone calls reporting people who snorted, smoked or ate the spice.

“It’s the flavor of the month,” said Dr. Jeffrey Bernstein, medical director at the center. “But most people only try it once because they have such nasty side effects. The rewards are not worth the risks.”

Nasty Side Effects

About 30 minutes to an hour after taking large doses of nutmeg, people usually have severe gastrointestinal reactions, including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. But that’s just the beginning. Hours into the high, people can suffer from heart and nerve problems as well.

“This is where people have to be really alert,” said Gaylord Lopez, director of the Georgia Poison Center in Atlanta. “A person who has an unrecognized heart ailment could have problems that could lead to irregular rhythms. One plus one can add up to nine really quickly.”

Visual, auditory or sensory hallucinations do not set in until hours after ingesting the spice, so there is also the worry that someone could overdose, thinking they haven’t taken enough to feel anything.

Dr. Marcel Casavant, medical director of the Central Ohio Poison Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, said that it is fairly common for teenagers to experiment with household products to get high. And the results can be devastating.

Danger Drugs in the Home

Household goods, including nutmeg, magic markers and whipped cream cans can cause seizures, cardiac damage and even something called sudden sniffing death syndrome.

Casavant described the syndrome: “One minute, they’re alive and abusing the product and in the next, they’ve dropped dead.”

“The most common story I hear in these cases is that the person gets scared or spooked [while on the drug],” said Casavant. “For most people, there is a small increase in the heart beat, but for these folks on these drugs, their heart beats uncontrollably fast and they die.”

According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, so far there have been 67 cases of nutmeg exposure in 2010.

To put the numbers in perspective, there have been nearly 5,000 marijuana phone calls counted by the AAPCC this year.

The AAPCC said the most common drugs treated by poison center are legal and illegal pharmaceuticals, including opioids and analgesic drugs.

Bernard Sangalli, director of the Connecticut Poison Control Centers, said that, though fairly uncommon, nutmeg abuse is periodically rediscovered.

“We’ll see cases like clusters with nutmeg,” said Sangalli. “As people share their experiences on the Internet, we see more and more clustering of those events.”

Nutmeg intoxication epidemics were seen in the early 1900s, and a small resurgence was seen in the mid-1960s.

Now, many doctors say the Internet has played a large role in its most recent, albeit small, upswing.

“Now, people are tweeting and YouTubing, and the information travels faster than the speed of light,” said Lopez. “These are the kind of stories that get out quicker than you blink twice.”

Bernstein noted the spice’s recent publicity, and said the media can play a part in bringing attention to these experimental drugs.

“Like most drugs of abuse, they all have a cycle and all go in and out of being popular,” said Bernstein. “Primarily this is a young person’s drug of abuse because it’s cheap and accessible and, for the most part, legal.”

Nutmeg and the DEA

Currently, the FDA has no plans to regulate the spice.

For a substance to be controlled or illegal, the Drug Enforcement Administration considers certain factors, including impact, pattern of use, and potency of the drug.

Among the factors, the DEA writes: In evaluating existing abuse, the DEA Administrator must know not only the pattern of abuse, but whether the abuse is widespread. In reaching a decision, the Administrator considers the economics of regulation and enforcement attendant to such a decision.

Because the side effects are so wretched, and because one has to ingest so much of the spice to get a high, doctors said that those who try the spice usually do not try it again. Because of this, controlling the spice would not see great benefits.

A Parental Heads-Up

But doctors said parents should be aware of household items that can be used to get high, including nutmeg, aerosol cans, magic markers and computer dusting products.

“It’s difficult for us to monitor our teenagers in the few hours that we see them,” said Lopez. “We don’t know what they’re doing all the time, so it’s important to watch for the kind of behaviors that raise red flags.”

If a child suddenly becomes withdrawn or segregates himself from the group, Lopez said these behavioral problems deserve attention.

“It’s important for parents to be aware to put this stuff away and keep an eye on their kids,” said Lopez. “Because really, who’s going to expect that little Mary or Johnnie saw something like this on YouTube and think, ‘oh nutmeg can make me high, I should try that.'”

If you or someone you know has poison or drug concerns, call the Poison Control Center telephone number at 1-800-222-1222 to connect to your local poison center. People can remain anonymous when walking into the center, calling or doing a live chat.

Poison control centers have recently received a handful of phone calls reporting abuse by snorting, smoking, or eating nutmeg, which, in large doses, causes a hallucinogenic high.

Can You Get High on Nutmeg? Why This Isn’t a Good Idea

Nutmeg, also known as Myristica fragrans, is a common cooking spice known for its warm flavor and sweet taste.

Indonesia is home to the nutmeg tree. This tree grows a fruit that holds the nutmeg seed. After harvesting the fruit, the seed can be dried for a period of weeks. This dried nut can then be used to create the spice we know so well.

The most popular culinary uses of nutmeg include:

  • baked goods such as puddings and pies
  • savory dishes and sauces
  • classic drinks like eggnog

You may also have come across rumors that nutmeg can get you high. While this may be true, there’s more to the story.

Let’s explore the science behind the cause of the “nutmeg high,” as well as the risks associated with using this spice recreationally.

The chemical responsible for the “high” caused by nutmeg is known as myristicin. Myristicin is a compound found naturally in the essential oils of certain plants, such as parsley, dill, and nutmeg.

Myristicin is also found in different spices. It comprises most of the chemical makeup of nutmeg oil and is found in the largest amounts in this spice. In the human body, the breakdown of myristicin produces a compound that affects the sympathetic nervous system.

Peyote is another well-known plant whose compound, mescaline, acts in a similar way to the myristicin in nutmeg. Both mescaline and myristicin affect the central nervous system (CNS) by enhancing the neurotransmitter norepinephrine.

This effect on the CNS is what eventually leads to side effects such as hallucinations, dizziness, nausea, and more.

Research on nutmeg intoxication is sparse. But there are a handful of studies and case reports on some of the dangerous side effects of consuming too much myristicin.

The first claims of nutmeg “intoxication” date back to the 1500s, after a pregnant woman had eaten more than 10 nutmeg nuts. It wasn’t until the 19th century that research began to investigate the effects of myristicin from nutmeg on the CNS.

In one case report, an 18-year-old female complained of nausea, dizziness, heart palpitations, and dry mouth, among other symptoms. Although she didn’t report any hallucinations, she did mention feeling as if she was in a trance-like state.

It was later revealed that she had consumed almost 50 grams (g) of nutmeg in the form of a milkshake roughly 30 minutes before her symptoms began.

In a much more recent case study, a 37-year-old female found herself experiencing the symptoms of myristicin intoxication after consuming only two teaspoons (roughly 10 grams) of nutmeg. Her symptoms also included dizziness, confusion, grogginess, and an extremely dry mouth.

In both case studies, the symptoms occurred within hours and lingered for roughly 10 hours. Both individuals were released after observation and made a full recovery.

Although these cases seem rare, a review of the literature from the Illinois Poison Center over a 10-year period revealed over 30 documented cases of nutmeg poisoning. An analysis of the data investigated both intentional and unintentional exposures, as well as drug interactions leading to toxicity.

The investigation revealed that almost 50 percent of the cases were intentional, with only 17 being unintentional exposures. The largest group of people who were unintentionally exposed to nutmeg intoxication were minors under the age of 13.

The most common symptoms in the 10-year review included:

  • hallucinations
  • drowsiness
  • dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • confusion
  • seizure (in two cases)

Some of the other notable side effects were respiratory, cardiovascular, and gastric distress.

While nutmeg may seem like an easy way to experiment with getting high, myristicin is an incredibly potent and dangerous compound when taken in large amounts.

In addition to the short-term effects of nutmeg intoxication, there are much more dangerous risks of consuming too much of this spice. In some cases, toxic doses of myristicin have caused organ failure. In other cases, nutmeg overdose has been linked to death when used in combination with other drugs.

Small amounts of nutmeg can be used safely in cooking. Most recipes only call for roughly 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg per recipe. These recipes are often split into multiple portions, leaving the actual exposure to nutmeg very insignificant.

According to the case studies from the Illinois Poison Center, even 10 grams (approximately 2 teaspoons) of nutmeg is enough to cause symptoms of toxicity. At doses of 50 grams or more, those symptoms become more severe.

Like any other drugs, the dangers of nutmeg overdose can occur no matter the method of delivery. According to the University of Utah’s drug delivery resource, the different methods of ingestion can affect how quickly it takes for the active compounds to reach the brain.

Inhalation, or smoking, is one of the fastest methods of delivery. Injecting a drug directly into a vein is the second fastest. The slowest method of delivery for a drug or compound is through ingesting the substance orally.

Because of this, the dangers of myristicin consumption become that much more likely for those who choose to use alternate methods of delivery, such as inhaling or injecting.

Nutmeg is used to enhance delicious fall dishes like holiday pies and stews. However, there’s been a recent trend spreading on the internet that you can also get high on nutmeg. While this may be true, ingesting more nutmeg than is found in your typical eggnog has definite risks. We’ll tell you what you need to know.

Russian Assassin OG is an indica dominant hybrid strain created through a powerful three-way cross of the insanely popular Skywalker X Lemon OG Kush X Lemon OG Kush X Headband strains. Although the exact indica to sativa ratio is unknown due to variability in breeding, Russian Assassin’s THC level has been measured at up to 36%!! This bud is best known for its pungent minty smell that has a sharp citrus hint that almost stings the nose. The taste is very different, with a spicy earthy pungency that turns to a sweet citrus pine upon exhale. The Russian Assassin high is characterized by tingly activity in both the mind and the body. The high starts with a cerebral head rush that slams into your mind, leaving it completely pain free with a pleasant prickly effect that’s both energizing and uplifting. This head high slowly begins to spread throughout your body, grabbing hold and leaving you with a tingly body buzz that rids you of any physical pain and drops you into a melting pool of utter relaxation and complete bliss. Because of this potent combination of sativa and indica effects, Russian Assassin is said to be perfect for treating fatigue, mild to moderate cases of depression, chronic pain, and nausea. This bud has small dense and compact lumpy forest green popcorn-shaped nugs with light minty green patches, amber hairs, and a frosty layer of sugary white trichomes.

Product Review: 7Pipe, Twisty Glass Blunt

Glass blunts are really great for smoking marijuana without using papers. 7Pipe, unlike many others, puts a touch of class into their twisty glass blunt.

I quit smoking nicotine a number of years ago (black and milds). At the time I enjoyed using blunts to wrap my weed in, but wanted to give it a rest so I could get over my nicotine addiction. So I started using glass blunts and glass joints.

They are really easy to use as all you basically have to do is stuff some weed into the tube and you’re ready to go. If you leave a little sticking out of the end you can light it up and keep it lit just like you would a joint or blunt. Just ash it and push out a little more cannabis each time.

One of my first trips to Denver!

Problems I have faced with glass blunts:

  • The secondary tube doesn’t fit into the primary tube and so it falls apart all the time.
  • The secondary tube gets clogged/puts resin all over my mouth and lips.
  • It’s not always easy to get the last bit of weed out of the tube, leaving you needing a tool.
  • No way to carry it around.
  • Plain and boring. Just 2 tubes and a plastic ring.

Well, I picked up the 7Pipe, A Twisty Glass Blunt, about a month ago. I have been using it on a regular basis all over the state. It has hit the slopes in Breckenridge, crashed a pajama party at Marriott and even joined in for a brunch with friends.

The secondary tube on the 7Pipe is actually a gold spiral that assists in getting all of the marijuana out of the glass tube. Because of the design, this gold spiral fits all the way into the tube, unlike any other glass blunt I have ever used.

7Pipe comes with a mouthpiece that has tiny holes in it, allowing you to get a toke without getting Scooby snacks or a blast of unwanted resin. If the holes get clogged, there’s a little tool that will clean them out.

Because of the gold spiral, it is easy to get the last bit of weed out of the glass tube. Simply twist and it all comes out. It has been easy to clean too since there isn’t a a tiny glass tube, just a twisty spiral.

I have wanted a way to carry a glass blunt around and 7Pipe has it. The glass blunt came with a black bag and, for a more secure carry, a nice box. I can throw it in my bag when I’m going to go out for a hike or to sesh with friends. Or, I can throw the box in my suitcase or carry on when I am traveling (I always am sure to clean it thoroughly before I transport it).

It did take a few tries for me to completely understand how to operate the 7Pipe. First, take the gold spiral out of the tube. Next, stuff the tube with weed (stuff it kind of tightly, but not too tight). Last, screw in (like a screw; righty tighty, lefty loosy). The last part is super important because if you screw it in the wrong way, it will just pack the glass blunt super tight and not screw in.

Overall, I think this is one of my favorite glass blunts. I have used (and broken) at least 100 different glass blunts and this one is definitely above par. You can get your own 7Pipe on their website: 7Pipe, A Twisty Glass Blunt.

I love the packaging and the gold spiral, but I wish the glass cylinder was more heady. I have one glass blunt that has a lizard on top of it. Another with designs on the outside. I would like 7Pipe to do some custom pieces the next time they drop new product.

Otherwise, I dig it. I will be carrying it with me to the High Times Cup this weekend too, so be on the look out for it… and me!

Twisty Glass Blunt Review 2020, Why It’s a Must Have

A twist on a modern staple.

When it comes to cannabis, there are many devices you can smoke out of. There’s the known players: papers, blunt wraps, pipes, and bongs.

There’s also the freaky contenders like: apple bongs, gravity bongs, and tabletop vaporizers. And then there’s the space-age stuff. Devices like 7Pipe’s Original Twisty Glass Blunts.

What is a Twisty Glass Blunt?

Glass blunts are a relatively new concept. Basically, they’re a combination of bongs and blunts. Picture if a steamroller and a one-hitter had a baby: that’s a glass blunt.

Twisty Glass Blunts have a metal twist screw that makes loading and unloading cannabis pretty simple. The size of the twist screws create individual chambers that allow you to pack 5 bowls in a Twisty Glass Blunt.

How Do You Use a Twisty Glass Blunt?

The process for using a Twisty Glass Blunt is extremely easy

Step 1: Pull the screw out of the glass

Step 2: Fill the glass tube with flower

Step 3: Twist the screw (left) into the glass tube

Step 4: Light that thang and enjoy

When you need to clean your Twisty Glass Blunt, all you have to do is pull the mouthpiece and the twist screw will come out of the glass. Then run the screw and glass through a salt + isopropyl alcohol cleaning solution and voila, you’re ready to get high again.

While glass blunts are similar to actual tobacco/hemp wrap blunts in some way, they’re actually much closer to chillums in design and use.

What Is A Chillum and How Is It Like A Twisty Glass Blunt?

Chillums are just big one-hitters. In fact, they’re multi-hitters. Pack a chillum bowl and you can get several hits before cashing the bowl.

The difference between a regular chillum and the Twisty Glass Blunt is the amount of cannabis packed into the twisty bois, which can be up to 1 ounce! A regular chillum can house no more than a smidge of cannabis.

What Are The Pros and Cons of 7Pipe’s Twisty Glass Blunt?

Ease of Use

For one, the ability to load, unload, and clean the device with such ease makes it a premium product. Think about how many of us have bongs that are absolutely filthy, but the thought of needing to get salt, alcohol, bags, and plugs is enough for them to remain dirty.

Being able to pull the screw out of the glass, run it through a quick salt/alcohol rinse, then dry and use it again all within 10 minutes makes this product well worth the $29.99.

Cost

If you want into a glass shop to buy a decent pipe, you’re probably paying for $40-$60 at bare minimum. For $29.99 7Pipe’s Twisty Glass Blunt is an extremely worthwhile alternative.

For blunts, a pack of wraps can cost between $1 and $5 on average, but then you have to keep purchasing them, eventually paying hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars throughout the year on wraps alone. A Twisty Glass Blunt is a one-time gift that keeps on giving.

Customization

7Pipe’s Twisty Glass Blunts come in multiple sizes, making them great options for consumers of all levels. The smallest choice, the Twisty Glass Mini houses .5 grams, while the largest option, The Super Twisty houses a whopping 2 ounces of greenery.

Infinite Cherry

The Twisty Glass Blunts light once and stay lit throughout your entire session. This makes them great for both solo and group sessions.

Portability

The ability to pack-and-go is huge when it comes to handheld cannabis devices. Sometimes we’re on the go and don’t have to time pack our entire supply of flower, grinders, papers, AND lighters.

With the Twisty Glass Blunts, you just grind up a big amount of weed, toss it into a tube, pocket that thang, and roll out into the world.

Smell

The biggest and only con to the Twisty Glass Blunts is the smell. Even when you use one of the rubber caps that come with the device, the mouthpiece will still reek of weed.

In many environments this is perfectly fine, it’s just something to be cognizant of.

The Twisty Glass Blunts Final Call

If I had 30 bucks, needed a piece, and wanted something extremely versatile that requires little-to-no maintenance, I’d buy a Twisty Glass Blunt in a heartbeat.

The ability to grind up a huge amount and just dump it into a tube, without having to continuously go out and purchase wraps is an absolute game changer for my smoking routine.

I was already considering letting blunts go, purely from the financial standpoint of someone that smokes 732 times a day, and the Twisty Glass Blunt makes the choice for me.

If I had 30 bucks, needed a piece, and wanted something extremely versatile that requires little-to-no maintenance, I’d buy a Twisty Glass Blunt in a heartbeat. Hell, even if I didn’t need a piece, I’d still cop one of these. They’re pretty fire.

RAW History

Early 1600’s-1700’s cigarette paper was supplied in large sheets known as “rolling paper” where smokers would have to hand-cut sections from this paper in order to use it. This all changed, however, when Father Jaime Villanueva Estingo invented the first rolling paper booklet circa 1800 in Jativa, Spain (just outside of Alcoy). RAW Paper is proudly from the Alcoy region of Spain and is made footsteps from where the first rolling papers were ever made.

This product is made in Spain, and contains 32 sheets standard quantity of rolling papers per package.

The adhesive is fairly strong and I would recommend only going over it with your tongue once in order to prevent taking off the adhesive sugars, and turning the sheet unusable.

Do not moisten any other areas except for the adhesive as the paper can be torn very easily. Pros: Smooth taste, very clean and even burn on a perfect roll. Meh: Not the best, but far from the worst. Cons: Adhesive comes off fairly easily, so you have to be very careful. Burns fast outdoors.

What Happens If You Smoke Paper?

Can be ripped if your not careful rolling the thin paper. Newbs be warned, once you feel comfortable rolling these are certainly amongst the best rolling papers available. Ok, im smoking my first vegan joint and I feel better already. I dont taste anything from the paper, maybe because its vegan attributes…. If you can roll a perfect cigarette, then you will find that RAW papers burn slowly, evenly, they are very light, tasteless, and are a pleasure to roll.

I will not let a review go by without touching on the CONs. The packaging is nice because the papers are creaseless, but you will notice that the top of the papers the gum side will eventually roll over the edge of the packaging. In time, this will ruin your papers. You have to be very conscious of this or else RAWs will be a disappointment. Overall, if you are careful and respect the RAW paper, it will treat you very nicely in return. I could care less.

I use them because they are simply the best papers on the market today. I love RAW papers, especially the new Organic ones. What could be grosser than licking pig glue? It always burns even and leaves me with a smile. Although all these comments of RAW papers simply being the best papers ever are very true I would like to touch on a couple very important attributes I found very user friendly beside the ones stated previously.

Smokers have you eer bought a pack of papers only to wonder if maybe the guy behind the counter had maybe over the last couple shifts he worked had slipped a couple papers out to use for free. I love everything about RAW papers. Your email address will not be published.

Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. I was under the impression that all rolling papers were made of plant material only.

Smoking paper produces a combination of particles and gases that varies depending on all these factors. Paper heavily treated with ink or other chemicals can produce a more hazardous combination when smoked. Even if a piece of paper is completely free of ink and other chemicals, smoking it still results in smoke inhalation, which can cause damage to lungs over time. While not as extreme as the smoke inhalation caused by a real fire, the inhalation that results from smoking paper can still cause irritation and asphyxiation.

weed blackout

Why Does a Single Hit of Weed Make Me Faint?

One night in 2005, at a party at my house, two things happened: I had a single toke from a joint, and a friend introduced me to her new boyfriend. For most people this confluence of events would be no problem, but my body was not having it. As my friend’s boyfriend dribbled on about his adventures in Peru, his fluffy hair began to morph and swirl. The more it swirled, the more I wanted to vomit. Then his voice started piping down through a tiny hole in the roof, then… nothing. It was lights out. That was the first time it happened, but soon enough it became apparent that this was my fate. I could not inhale marijuana—not even a little bit, not even sans alcohol—without blacking out. But why? Is my constitution so delicate, just a whiff of weed requires its total shut-down?

One of the only studies conducted on this phenomenon was published in 1992. Researchers from Duke University gave ten healthy men a strong joint to smoke while standing up, and reported that six participants felt “moderate” to “severe” dizziness. Those who experienced severe dizziness also showed marked decreases in blood pressure, which went as low as 60 mmHg.

The standing-up part is key because it indicates weed could bring on something called orthostatic hypertension, low pressure caused by the movement or position of the body.

“Marijuana can cause quite profound lowering of blood pressure, and cause users to faint as not enough blood gets to the brain,” confirms Dr. Andrew Mongomery, a general practitioner. “A lesser lowering of blood pressure may lead to a sense of dizziness without actually passing out, [although] the biological mechanisms underlying this are highly complex and incompletely understood.

“Marijuana can also lead to anxiety,” he adds, “with a secondary effect of dizziness—or act on the brain directly to create a sense of rotational dizziness.”

Blood vessels dilate, causing the brain to be deprived of oxygen and thus blacking out.

Dr. Harry McConnell, a Professor of neuropsychiatry at Griffith University’s Menzies Health Institute, says the reason behind a weed-related fainting spell depends on the situation and the individual. Aside from a possible drop in blood pressure, “it could also be seizures that cause blackouts, or the other chemicals mixed with it. After all, Marijuana is not pure, so it might have recreational chemicals mixed with it. People may not be aware of those ingredients.

“Marijuana might [also] cause vasodilation,” Dr. McConnell continues, “where blood vessels dilate, causing the brain to be deprived of oxygen and thus blacking out. Sometimes episodes of vertigo can also cause blackouts.”

Then there is the possible effect of other recreational substances, possible other drug interactions, personal medications, or medical conditions. A study from 2002 noted that while weed’s “cardiovascular effects” are not associated with serious health problems for most young, healthy users, people with cardiovascular disease could be putting their health at risk. This is “because of the consequences of the resulting increased cardiac work, increased catecholamine levels, carboxyhemoglobin, and postural hypotension.”

Whatever the reason behind your body’s hatred of the herb, accept that the weed life may not be for you, and get yourself seen to. “[Fainting from marijuana use] is not certainly uncommon,” confirms McConnell. “It’s recognized. But it’s always important to go to a doctor and get evaluated.”

Fainting

Updated on January 29, 2019. Medical content reviewed by Dr. Joseph Rosado, MD, M.B.A, Chief Medical Officer

While medical marijuana offers several benefits to patients, such as pain relief, it also poses several side effects, like many other medicines available today. One side effect some patients have experienced when using medical weed is fainting.

Additional Side Effects of Medical Marijuana

For medical marijuana physicians, the goal is to ensure you’re receiving treatments that offer you the maximum benefit. Because of that, they weigh the potential side effects of medical marijuana for your condition and consider your medical history to predict how you may respond to medical weed.

In some cases, you and your doctor may decide to incorporate medical cannabis into your treatment plan because of its side effects. People with insomnia, for instance, have benefited from using medical weed in the evening, as it can cause drowsiness.

How Does Medical Weed Cause Fainting?

Fainting from medical weed is caused by several factors, including:

  • Blood Pressure: One of the cannabinoids found in medical cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is a vasodilator, which means it expands your blood vessels — this is one reason patients with high blood pressure use medical pot. That decrease in blood pressure, however, can cause an increased heart rate and, in some cases, fainting.
  • Administration: When you smoke or vaporize medical marijuana, you feel the effects faster. In comparison, edibles and oils need more time to take effect. So, if you smoke medical cannabis, you may experience a sudden drop in blood pressure, which can surprise your body and result in fainting.

While standing doesn’t affect how medical weed interacts with your mind, it can make you more prone to fainting.

Signs of Fainting From Medical Cannabis

Signs you may be about to faint include:

  • Feeling dizzy
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision

If you’re at home with loved ones, they may notice you becoming pale or unresponsive before fainting.

Long-Term Side Effects of Fainting

In most cases, fainting doesn’t cause any long-term side effects. One of the risks with fainting, whether it’s after giving blood, standing up too fast or using medical weed, is harming yourself when collapsing, such as by hitting your head. If this happens, don’t hesitate to go to the hospital. Should you faint on multiple occasions, it could be a sign of a more serious heart-related condition.

How to Prevent Fainting From Medical Marijuana

For most patients, fainting isn’t a tolerable side effect, and physicians agree. Because doctors understand why medical weed can cause fainting, they’ve developed several techniques for preventing it, including:

  • Switching Your Strain: Since THC acts as a vasodilator, choosing a strain with low-THC and high-CBD content can limit its effects on your blood vessels, which then minimizes the chance of you fainting. Your doctor or budtender may be able to recommend a specific strain for your condition.
  • Administering Your Medicine Sitting Down: Compared to sitting, standing places you at a higher risk of fainting. In fact, remedies for preventing fainting suggest sitting or lying down. Having fresh air, such as a breeze from an open window, can also help you avoid feeling faint.

If you’re having fainting spells when you use medical weed, consult with your physician before altering your treatment plan.

Talk to Your Medical Marijuana Doctor About Your Fainting

Because physicians understand the cause of fainting from medical weed and how to prevent it, it’s often still beneficial for patients to continue their treatment. But, it’s crucial that you continue meeting with a licensed, knowledgeable and compassionate medical marijuana doctor to discuss your symptoms and any potential changes to your treatment plan.

What to Do if Your Weed Gets Wet

We’re all human. Mistakes happen. Anyone who smokes frequently eventually loses their weed, accidentally throws it away, or even spills a drink all over their stash. The “my weed got wet” moment isn’t a fun one. If you’re reading this now for that very reason, you’re probably asking a few questions. Can you still smoke weed if it gets wet? What happens when weed gets wet? What the best way to dry wet weed? Fortunately for you, we know a few methods for safely drying it out. These tricks won’t work every time, but it’s worth a shot, right?

The Problem With Wet Weed

You might be tempted to just ignore the fact that your weed is wet – we suggest not doing this. First off, over time, wet weed will develop mold. Moldy weed is dangerous to your health, so you should do everything you can to prevent its development. Additionally, wet marijuana is almost impossible to grind; and even if it was already ground before it got wet, it’s incredibly difficult to burn. Finally, even if you do manage to somehow get it to burn, it’ll taste awful. Damp, acrid weed with excess water vapor due to moisture is a very unpleasant experience. Trust us.

There are three specific occurrences that, unfortunately, make it unsafe to smoke your bud. Regardless of whether you dry it out successfully, weed is no longer safe to smoke if it’s been run through the washing machine or dropped in a pool or the ocean. Marijuana that’s been contaminated by sea salt or chemicals like chlorine and detergent aren’t safe to smoke.

How to Dry Your Wet Weed

The Paper Method

If you’re wondering how to dry wet weed, there are two primary options: the paper method and the rice method. The paper method is the fastest way to dry weed. Just follow these steps:

  1. Break up your nugs into smaller pieces
  2. Tightly wrap your wet marijuana in thick paper towels
  3. Place your wrapped weed in a dry, dark area
  4. Turn on a nearby fan or dehumidifier (not necessary, but helps prevent mold)
  5. Change the paper every few hours until your weed is dry

One downside to this method is a higher potential for mold. Because it’ll be in direct contact with the paper that’s absorbing water, there’s a chance that moisture will build and mold will grow. Make sure to keep an eye out for this if you choose the paper method.

The Rice Method

This method takes a little more time, but mold is much less likely to grow in the process. The rice method works for weed the same way it does for wet electronics. Follow these steps:

  1. Place your weed in a container of rice (mason jars are ideal)
  2. Put your uncovered container of rice in a dry, dark area
  3. Turn on a nearby fan or dehumidifier (not necessary, but helps prevent mold)
  4. Leave the marijuana in rice for 24 hours
  5. If there’s any leftover moisture, break up your weed nugs and commence with the paper method

The biggest downside to this method is that your bud will likely be covered in residual rice flower and have a faint rice smell (however, this is part of what makes it work so effectively).

What Not To Do

If you’re wondering how to dry weed as fast as possible, please refer to one of the two methods above. Other, quicker methods won’t be nearly as effective. Blow drying, putting it in the sun, and especially microwaving weed are all going to lower the quality of your bud and make it much harsher to smoke. Even leaving it out in the open with a fan may result in a lower-quality smoking experience. Also note that heat, light and humidity all increase the likelihood of growing mold. Instead, take your time, use one of the two methods above, and dry your wet bud in a dark, dry, well-ventilated area.

As we’ve previously stated, it’s really unhealthy to inhale mold. We know it’s sad, but you’re better off throwing away moldy weed than smoking it and getting really sick. Plus, moldy weed will taste absolutely disgusting. Both before and after you dry it, check your weed for mold. Generally speaking, mold will form as a powdery white substance on the surface of your nugs. Dark spots or yellow/gray fuzz may also appear where it shouldn’t, along with slime and sickly smell. If your weed has been wet and shows any of these sings, toss it.

How To Avoid Getting Your Weed Wet

Correct cannabis storage will ensure your weed is less likely to get wet and more likely to stay in quality condition. Safe storage will also stop moisture from causing mold overtime. The answer to “does marijuana go bad” is a resounding yes. Poor storage can result in bad weed. Follow these tips to ensure your weed stays smokable and accident-proof.

  • Use airtight jars to store weed in dry, dark places
  • Only take out how much weed you’re going to smoke at any given time
  • If you have to travel with weed, keep it in a small, air-tight container
  • Keep your weed away from pools and never put it in your swimwear pockets
  • Be gentle with your weed and treat it like it’s worth something (because it is!)

These storage and drying methods are tried-and-true, but we also know the cannabis community is a fairly crafty crew. Share your personal tips and tricks for drying and safely storing weed, below. We’re always looking for better ways to keep our weed safe and smokable.

We’re all human. Mistakes happen. Anyone who smokes frequently eventually loses their weed, accidentally throws it away, or even spills a drink all over their stash. The

“Wet” vs. “Dry” Cured Cannabis

I decided to do an experiment while curing cannabis, and I got some Interesting Results!

I put WB#1 into jars too wet. I put WB#2 into jars way too DRY. Both with boveda packs. Stored them under my bed, now over a month. (rolled them in my hands occasionally to prevent lumping, but No Burping)

You’ll notices the weight and size differences of the nugs. WB1 cured nice and dense and aromatic as hell. Sticky Icky. The WB1 has a very dense smoke when burning, so seems stronger.

WB2 buds are light, airy, and also smell great… not as strong though, or maybe it’s the density. But sticky and really kicks me on my ass. I mean, blurred vision when smoking heavy o_0 ! Love it!

Not attempting to start a pro/con of boveda packs… just wanted to show how differently they turned out. Both Awesome as hell, and better than anything I’ve every purchased, bar none.

Thanks to GWE website & community 🙂

Update: 4 months later…

Hi Nebula, if you’ll recall, the Whiteberry that I jarred with boveda packs while still too wet… the dense nugs? Well, opened jar for the 1st time after 4 months… Ermahgerd! What a wonderful treat. Very sticky when you break it by hand, gotta tear chunks off to smoke.. and it slow burns forever 😉 the jar smells just like strawberry jam.

Just thought I’d share, as you mentioned you may try it sometime. I’ll certainly do another jar or two next harvest… just to try to repeat the process… 1st time was kinda an accident/laziness really 😉

Smoking a bowl is a classic method for smoking marijuana. Bowls are mainstays in cannabis culture. Here’s everything you need to know about packing and smoking a bowl.

What is a bowl?

A bowl is one of the main components of a pipe or bong. Specifically, a bowl is the rounded-out part into which you pack your marijuana. The name of this component comes from an obvious source—a bowl is basically a small dish or basin designed for holding cannabis.

When you ignite the marijuana and give your pipe or bong a drag, the smoke travels through the bowl, down the hole, into the pipe, and from there, into your lungs. Photo by: Gina Coleman/Weedmaps

The bowl is attached to the body of your pipe or bong. At the bottom of your bowl, there will be a hole leading to the body of the pipe. When you ignite the marijuana and give your pipe or bong a drag, the smoke travels through the bowl, down the hole, into the pipe, and from there, into your lungs.

Bowls look and function a little bit differently depending on if they’re used in a regular pipe or in a bong. Bowls on the end of a pipe typically have a hole on the side called a carb. The carb plays a key role in controlling airflow, so you can let the pipe fill with smoke and then clear it when you’re ready to take a hit. On the other hand, bowls used with a bong usually do not have a carb. Instead, you control airflow by sliding the bowl in and out of your bong’s downstem.

What you need to pack a bowl

To pack and smoke a bowl, you will need:

  • Marijuana
  • A grinder
  • A pipe with a bowl on the end. The simplest kind is called a “spoon pipe,” but there are also variations, such as bubblers which include a small water chamber in addition to the bowl and body.
  • Depending on your smoking preferences, you may need a bong with a downstem and bowl.
  • A lighter or hemp wick to combust your marijuana
  • As an extra option, you can use a tamping tool to more evenly pack the marijuana into the bowl.

Step-by-step instructions for packing a bowl

Option 1: Packing a bowl on a regular pipe

1. Grind your weed. If you’re using a spoon pipe, or some variation of a spoon pipe, you will begin by grinding your marijuana. The goal is to get a consistent grind so that all the little pieces of marijuana are more or less the same size.

The best way to accomplish this is with a grinder. If you have a grinder, place a medium-sized nug into the chamber where the grinding teeth are located. Put the cap back on and twist it back and forth until the nug is completely ground. If you do not have a grinder, you can use a pair of clean, sharp scissors or your hands to break your nug into small, evenly-sized pieces.

2. Pack your bowl. Once you’ve ground your marijuana, carefully pick up a pinch of weed between your fingertips. Place the weed into the bowl and gently tamp it down with your finger, the flat end of a lighter, or a tamping tool. Don’t pack it too tightly, otherwise you’ll have difficulty pulling the smoke through the bowl and into the pipe.

Tip: Place your pipe over a plate or tray while you’re packing it so you can easily gather up any pieces of weed that happen to fall out of the bowl during the process.

3. Smoke your pipe. Hold the bowl in one hand with your thumb covering the carb hole. Place the pipe to your lips. With your other hand, use a lighter or hemp wick to light a corner of the bowl. Once the weed sparks, pull the flame away and begin dragging in with your lungs. When you’re ready to inhale, remove your thumb from the carb and give a big drag. All the smoke that has built up inside the pipe will now rush into your lungs.

4. Ash your bowl. When the marijuana has all been burned, dump out the ash so your bowl is ready to be re-packed for your next session.

Option 2: Packing a bowl in a bong

1. Grind your weed. As with a regular spoon pipe, the goal here is to get a consistent grind so that all the little pieces of marijuana are more or less the same size.

The best way to accomplish this is with a grinder. If you have a grinder, place a medium-sized nug into the chamber where the grinding teeth are located. Put the cap on and twist it back and forth until the nug is completely ground.

Don’t pack it down too tightly, otherwise you’ll have difficulty pulling the smoke through the bowl and into the bong.

Tip: Set your bong on top of a plate or tray while you’re packing the bowl so you can easily gather up any pieces of weed that happen to fall out of the bowl during the process.

3. Smoke your bong. Slide your weed-packed bowl into the downstem of your bong. When it’s in place, use a lighter or hemp wick to ignite the weed. As you do this, put your mouth to the mouthpiece and start pulling in with your lungs. You will see the smoke travel from the bowl, flow through the downstem, and begin bubbling up through the water in the base of your bong. When you’re ready to take a hit, continue pulling in with your lungs and slide the bowl out of the downstem. This will create an open flow of air, allowing you to clear the chamber and inhale all the smoke.

4. Ash your bowl. When you’re finished and you’ve fully combusted all the marijuana in your bowl, dump out the ash so your bowl is ready to re-pack for your next session.

Why people like smoking from glass bowls

If you’re packing and smoking a bowl, odds are that you’re using a glass smoking device. Glass is known for providing a simple, straightforward, and clean way to smoke cannabis. Specifically, because glass is an inert substance, it can be heated without leaching residual odors, flavors, or contaminants into the smoke. As such, many smokers enjoy glass pieces because they can be used over and over again without detracting from marijuana’s natural tastes and smells. Additionally, when a glass bowl or pipe becomes dirty or gunked up with sticky resin, the material can easily be cleaned and returned to like-new condition.

Why people hate smoking from glass bowls

There are a few reasons some cannabis smokers don’t like smoking from glass. Glass can shatter, chip, and break, especially if you drop your piece or ash in too aggressively.

In rare cases, poorly-made glass can shatter under intense heat, which could be dangerous.

Glass pieces are not as mobile or discreet as other methods of smoking. Even small glass pipes like chillums get dirty and smelly after a few uses, thanks to the sticky resin that coats the bowl or pipe after smoking. This makes glass hard to carry with you or use for on-the-go smoking.

Some smokers simply prefer the experience of rolling and smoking a joint, spliff, or blunt, as opposed to packing and smoking a bowl.

Bottom line

With a few basic cannabis supplies, such as a grinder, packing and smoking a bowl is easy to achieve, especially if you’re using one made of glass.

Recreational Marijuana 101: How to Smoke a Pipe

One of the most recognizable smoking devices is a cannabis pipe. These pipes are categorized in two groups: carb and carb-less. Those with a “carb,” or small hole, allow for the clearing of smoke in the pipe.

Carb-less pipes are referred to as “chillums” or “one-hitters.” These are available in a variety of shapes, and are usually straight tubes that mimic the appearance of cigarettes or discrete designs.

Pipes with a carb are often called “bowls” or “spoons.” They’re generally spoon-shaped in form. Pipes with carbs are designed for larger amounts of cannabis, and they can generally go around a circle of friends for multiple puffs.

Pipe Smoking for Beginners

When compared to joints or blunts, the primary benefits of consuming cannabis with a pipe are increased smoke and less ash. While joints, blunts, and other rolled options may be seen as more portable, their combustion method involves a significant amount of ash.

Additionally, a clean pipe will be less harsh than a joint or blunt.

How cannabis pipes work

Pipes provide their function using three aspects of the device:

  1. The mouthpiece: where you put your mouth
  2. The bowl: where you put your cannabis flower
  3. The carb hole: some pipes have a carb hole to allow the consumer to “clear” the pipe of residual smoke.

The cannabis is heated and smoke is inhaled through the mouthpiece.

How to choose a pipe

Choosing a pipe is based on personal taste. Standard chillums may be made out of clear glass or cigarette-shaped, while more intricate one hitters and bowls vary in color, shape, size, and details. If you want something that can be discreetly held in the palm of your hand, a one-hitter may be your best option. They’re carb-less, small, and typically stored in a wooden “dugout”.

If you’re looking for a piece that will last a long time, allow for larger smoke sessions, and has a carb hole, then a bowl is likely your best option. While you won’t be able to test the pipe before you buy, you can hold it as if you were using it to see how it feels in your hands and whether you can easily use the carb hole.

How to pack a pipe

When it comes to packing your pipe, ground cannabis is always your best option. It makes for a uniform burn and airflow, which means you’ll get the most consistent hits. Grind your cannabis in a grinder if you have one, or use your fingers to tear the flower into tiny bits. Fill the bowl of your pipe with a few pinches of ground herb.

If it is a larger bowl, you may need to grind up more cannabis, whereas smaller bowls and one-hitters require a small amount to fill the bowl.

How to smoke a pipe

Once loaded, ignite the bowl of cannabis using a lighter or hemp wick, while inhaling from the mouthpiece. If there is a carb, be sure to cover the carb hole using your thumb or finger while inhaling the first half of your puff. Then release your finger and allow air to flow through the carb hole while you inhale the second half of your hit.

For cannabis beginners, be sure to start with small amounts in each bowl, and wait several minutes between inhalations. Cannabis varies in potency, so “go slow and low” until you’ve developed familiarity with cannabis products.

How to clean a pipe

The more often you clean your pipe, the easier it will be to maintain. While cleaning after every use may be excessive, a 2019 study by Moose Labs shows that even a 10-minute smoking session with four friends will more than double the amount of bacteria on the mouthpiece of the pipe.

Soaking in isopropyl alcohol and acetone are great options for cleaning your pipes. If there’s a bit of resin that is stuck inside, add a few pinches of salt (epsom salt is the best) and shake to agitate the residue and help remove any leftover remnants and bacteria

A three-minute isopropyl alcohol soak is the most effective way to reduce bacteria and other residuals.

How to store a pipe

If your pipe is made of a material that could shatter, such as glass, clay or crystals, you’ll want to store it in something protective, such as a padded case or bag to keep it safe from impact shocks and bumps. Pipes made of wood, metals like aluminium, silicon and other similar materials should be placed in their storage pouches once appropriately cooled and cleaned.

For added discretion, consider a smell-proof container that stays airtight to avoid the smells of fresh or freshly-burned cannabis escaping.

Try For Yourself

Now that you’re familiar enough with cannabis pipes to be able to choose one for yourself, give it a try on your own. Feel free to refer back to this guide when shopping for and using your new pipe for the first time. Once you get the hang of it, you should be able to enjoy your pipe and legal cannabis without much guidance.

Most Negative Review

My vape was working one day and just stop charging the next! Charged it for 24hours and when i went to use it it would vibrate three times as if it is dead. Then when i went to plug it back it it is red even after and hour of me letting charge again to see if i was right it was green. Unplugged it once more and it was dead still. Been using it for only maybe two months…very pissed off it wasnt cheap!

  • Can the Liquid 9 vaporize e-liquid?

Theoretically, yes, but it’s intended for use with concentrates.

Can the Liquid 9 only be used with L9 cartridges?

The Liquid 9 will work with other 510 cartridges that are similar in size to the L9 cartridges, but some larger cartridges won’t fit.

Will the Jupiter Liquid 9 vaporize wax?

It won’t vaporize wax, but you can turn your wax into oil with some wax liquidizer. That’ll work just fine.

Not Your Normal Head Shop: Phoenix entrepreneur’s big endeavor

It’s the final half of your school ’ s basketball game. All eyes beat down on the opposing team as you stand to watch them shoot a free throw. The player takes his eyes off the hoop and looks at the crowd for a moment. So many students, parents, fans … and six-foot Hillary Clinton?

Giant heads are making all kinds of similar appearances across the world thanks to companies like Build-A-Head and its creator, Bryan Price.

Build-A-Head is a website based in Phoenix that allows users to log on, upload a photo and receive a giant face cutout, shipped out the very next day.

Users can choose between two to six foot tall Huge Heads, key chains, ornaments or Big Head Slims, which are heads printed on thinner paper and attached to a stick.

Price got the idea after seeing the demand for giant heads at sports games and festivals and the amount of fun people were having with them.

The only problem was the process. Printing and building a giant head attached to cardboard, foam or poster board proved to be a weekend-long process that was costing people a lot of money.

“ The cost was high, making them essentially impossible to create, ” Price said.

After graduating college, he took a job delivering pizzas in Scottsdale, allowing him enough time on the side to work on Build-A-Head.

What started out as a two person ordeal in his garage has grown into a business now employing 11 people, mobile and on-site, and operating out of a warehouse.

Now, getting a cardboard head is affordable, fast and a matter of a few clicks.

And the business is still growing.

Build-A-Heads have made appearances all over the world, including Rihanna ’ s foundation events the past two years.

“ It ’ s cool because, one, it ’ s Rihanna, and two, there ’ s a ton of people who attend that event, ” said Price.

Social media has also helped the head phenomenon. Build-A-Head has been seen on networks by the likes of ESPN, CNBC and Sports Illustrated.

“ It ’ s been crazy with social media, we see ourselves at events we didn ’ t even know we ’ d be at. ” Price said.

It ’ s not just sports though. Heads have found uses everywhere from marathons, pageants, fundraisers and graduations to political campaigns, birthday parties and weddings.

While he doesn ’ t necessarily have a favorite face he ’ s printed, he thinks the different occasions at which the heads have made appearances are special.

“ It ’ s a simple product, ” said Price, “ But they mean a lot to people at the events they go to, whether it ’ s a first birthday party or a college graduation for someone who ’ s the first person in their family to graduate. ”

Customers are easily at the forefront of Build-A-Head. The site boasts fantastic customer service with quick shipping and an ordering process that takes minutes.

While consulting the large selection of emoji cutouts, politician heads and life-sized cutouts, you might have one question: why heads?

Price cites the instantaneous recognizability and the joy that people have seeing the faces come through as the reason for their success.

“ We certainly live in a meme era, ” Price said, “ And the heads borderline on that. They ’ re a fun way for people to express themselves at events. ”

Build-A-Head has consistently grown and evolved and Price believes it will continue to do so. With Christmas coming up, the site offers face cutout ornaments.

The site also recently added Larry Fitzgerald, the Cardinals’ wide receiver, to their selection of celebrity heads in support of his foundation, the First Down Fund. Price says it’s a huge step in the direction of adding other licensed entertainers and athletes.

As for those nearing their last semester of senior year with business ideas of their own, Price has only one piece of advice: “ Plain and simple, work hard. When you think you ’ re worked hard enough, work harder. ”
